The New Life of Paul Sneijder, based on the novel by Jean-Paul Dubois

The New Life of Paul Sneijder, based on the novel by Jean-Paul Dubois

There is only one chance in a billion to have an event like the one that lays the foundation for this film.

An elevator accident starts the

New Life of Paul Sneijder

Thierry Lhermitte is excellent in the leading role.
Alas, neither his performance nor the movie have attracted almost any attention.

Only one user of IMDB has bothered to write a few words and the same number of critics have noted on it…
We are doubling that figure, here and now.

If one is to sum this narrative, it could be under the banner of Coping with Adversity and Trauma…
This is one important area of Positive Psychology and there are two ways out of a trauma, one much more common than the other:

Most men and women that have the tragic experience of losing someone close suffer from what is called:
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder

There is also a phenomenon called…
Post Traumatic Growth.

The hero of this film, Paul Sneijder, is starting a new life as is clear from the very name of the motion picture.

Moreover, it could be argued that he experiences both:
PTSD and Post Traumatic Growth.

Before the unbelievable accident, Paul Sneijder had been what is generally called a “successful man”.
Only part of the appeal of this film rests in the fact that it provokes audiences to think about fundamental issues:

What is a successful life?
Alas, most humans think in terms of money, important position, material goods, power, fame and we can look at The Donald to see into what a mess all these can translate.

After the tragic accident that kills his daughter in a falling elevator, Paul Sneijder is forced to face new challenges and questions.
After an initial, normal breakdown, once the PTSD seems to be weakening, the hero has the chance to cope with the adversity.

Besides, this is a chance to understand what matters and what is irrelevant, the fact that his senior position means nothing to him.
In fact, he becomes a…dog walker and if this makes his entourage classify him as a mental case, the protagonist enjoys it.

Well, not all the provocations that come with the job are exhilarating- take the collection of dog feces.
There are some characters he does not like and he refuses to engage with, like the lawyer who wants to represent him.

Paul Sneijder can obtain a large sum that in court, but he hesitates for a long period, in spite, perhaps in part because, of his families wishes.
The hero even wins a cup in a beauty contest for dogs, shows that this viewer is familiar with…

We used to have five borzois, Russian hounds that took part in and won a series of Dog Shows…
One could look at the New Life of Paul Sneijder and perceive it as a real, happy portion that had been denied before the tragic death of his daughter.

When the family does not stop pressing for a settlement that would bring in so much money, the protagonist refuses…

What about the education we can get with that sum?
This is exactly my point…I do not want the death of my child to be used and make it pay…

The result? I will not disclose it; I will only say that the family is very cruel.

Great Expectations, based very loosely on the masterpiece by Charles Dickens

Great Expectations, based very loosely on the masterpiece by Charles Dickens

The 1946 adaptation for the big screen is still much better that this version, in spite of the reputable cast.

Ethan Hawke as Finnegan Bell, Gwyneth Paltrow in the role of Estella, Chris Cooper as Joe, Anne Bancroft in the role of Ms. Dinsmoor, Robert de Niro as the prisoner Lustig and the other good actors make an effort.
Alas, the result is not satisfying.

                In part, disappointment comes from…

                Great Expectations

Positive Psychology suggests one rule of happiness, among many others, which recommends that:
                You lower your expectations.

If one has in mind the original masterpiece, we can find it on the list of best novels ever written.
It is on the Norwegian Book Club’s list of The Top 100 Books of All Time, available on the Guardian site:

Therefore, when considering that the original material is a chef d’oeuvre, viewers are entitled to anticipate a triumph.
Add to this the aforementioned stellar cast and you can walk into a cinema hall with dreamy eyes.

Only you would be better off staying at home and looking for the classic David Lean film, with John Mills.

In the Charles Dickens novel, a boy from a poor family saves a frightening fugitive who is later caught by the law.
Pip meets Estella and her protector, Miss Havisham, a rich woman that the hero thinks is responsible for his fortune.

An unknown benefactor pays for the ascension of the poor Pip, his transfer to London and consequent wellbeing.
Matters are more complicated with Estella, a girl that the resentful Havisham teaches to wound men.

Having been abandoned by a man, exactly on her wedding day, the old woman has a revenge to take.
Estella would be the instrument.

If the structure has been maintained to a certain degree, many aspects have been changed in the new adaptation.
Pip becomes Finnegan Bell and a painter, who has some exciting, erotic scenes with the beautiful Estella.

Gwyneth Paltrow might know a thing or two about wellbeing, given her new position as CEO of…Goop.
Late night show comedians have had a field day on the new company owned and controlled by Paltrow.

It is supposed to be offering advice, solutions and luxuriant means to suit any- extremely expensive- taste.
You can go to Goop with

Great Expectations
However, as Bill Maher joked about this phantasmagoria, it makes people who watch Se7en enjoy the end…

When the head of Paltrow, spoiler alert, the hilarious Bill Maher adds, is presented in a box, one is glad…
Alfonso Cuaron has had much better results:

Gravity, Y Tu Mama Tambien and for those who enjoy this kind of summer, teenage movie- Harry Potter

Alas, Great Expectations are not met in this modern, confusing at times take, with a horrifying Anne Bancroft, unconvincing Ethan Hawke, far from the days when he enchanted audiences with Before Sunset and Before Sunrise…

Blood Simple by Joel and Ethan Coen

Blood Simple by Joel and Ethan Coen

Blood Simple is the first chef d’oeuvre of the Coen Brothers

They are now established geniuses and cheered as a couple of cinema’s best creators and filmmakers.
Blood Simple was the work that launched their careers.

Ethan and Joel Coen explain in a documentary called American Cinema about this first project they launched in 1984.
It was followed by classics like:

Fargo- recently noted on by this viewer here: http://notesaboutfilms.blogspot.ro/ - The Big Lebowsky, No Country For Old Men, True Grit, The Man Who Wasn’t There, O Brother, Where Art Thou and others

In the days of making Blood Simple, the unknown Coen Brothers did not have the funds that would pour their way today.
Therefore, they had to be frugal in the extreme, drawing up the scenes in detail, because they had little money.

Joel and Ethan Coen give the example of the scene wherein Ray is facing Julian, on a road where a truck is approaching.
They had no resources to film many takes and it had all to be perfect on only one or very few tries.

Frances McDormand- winner of the Oscar for Fargo and a favorite this year for her leading part in Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri- has the role of Abby, married to Julian Marty.
She has an affair with an employee of her husband, Ray, who works at the bar where a murder will take place.
Julian is a heinous, resentful man who may deserve whatever he gets, even if his fate might be a bit too cruel.

He suspects his wife has an affair and hires another despicable man, detective Loren Visser who says:

-          If the sum is right and it is legal, I’ll do it
-          If the money is right, I will do it- this is the amendment advanced, when he is told that what he will have to do might not be legal.

These are the villains of the story and if they are ready to engage in anything, legal or not, if the pay is good enough says everything about them.
However, the detective is the more vicious and devious of the two, for he harbors a wicked plan for murder.

He is asked by the jealous, sadistic husband to kill the couple who have betrayed his trust and have been photographed together.
Loren Visser wants the ten thousand offered and tells his partner in crime to get away to fish and be noticed in another town.

However, he has a plan that will get him the money under circumstances that will be safest for him.
As this all happens way before the end, some details will be presented here, without the complicated twists that occur.

The detective and his employer meet at the bar, where the killer presents photographic proof of his murders.
He has pictures of Abby and Ray, embracing in bed, with their bodies apparently hit by bullets.

The coup de theatre is that Loren Visser kills Julian Marty.

Why would he do that?

Well, he has the gun that belongs to Abby and he places it at the murder scene, in this way the identity of the killer is obvious.
Only there are unforeseen developments.

Ray comes to ask for the money that Julian owes him, only to find him apparently dead and he thinks Abby must have done it.
Her revolver is there and the deceased has been shot.

An excellent crime story is only starting much of its intrigue and complicated narrative here, with Ray trying to help.

Nocturnal Animals, based on the novel by Austin Wright, written and directed by Tom Ford

Nocturnal Animals, based on the novel by Austin Wright, written and directed by Tom Ford

Nocturnal Animals was nominated for a series of important awards and has won sixteen prizes…

This is a story within a story, presented with grace, in a stylish manner by the fashion designer…
Who is also a writer and a director

Tom Ford!

The splendid Amy Adams is Susan Morrow in this film
In “real life”, she is married to Armie Hammer- wonderful this year in Call Me By Your Name-aka Hutton Morrow.

One night, as Amy calls her husband who is away on business, he keeps talking about his busy day.
We see him in the company of an attractive, young woman who climbs to his hotel room, late in the night.

While on the cellular phone with his wife, Hutton tells the elevator attendant to press the floor number.
As they reach the said floor, the man in the lift gives the game away:

                31st miss…

There is a long pause because Susan understood what is going on.
However, the main show takes place in the book given to her by her ex-husband, Jake Gyllenhaal.
The excellent actor plays two personages:

                Tony Hastings and Edward Sheffield.
The former is the ex-husband who wrote Nocturnal Animals, dedicated to his former wife…Susan.

He used to call her a Nocturnal Animal, because she seldom sleeps…at times, she gets no sleep at all.
In the book, Edward is driving his wife, Laura, and their daughter, India- what a beautiful name.

While on the road in Texas, hoodlums start creating trouble, tail gating and finally pushing the family off the road.
The villains claim they are the injured party and they want Edward to admit to that and face consequences.

They talk about the flat tire and they offer to help, only to kidnap the mother and daughter and force Edward to drive another car.
One of the brutes takes the demolished man into the wilderness and abandons him there, returning with the leader of the gang.

Ray is a disgusting red neck, with a very violent nature and murderous instincts that determine the fate of India and Laura.
Near the middle of the film, we learn that they are brutally raped and killed, with the daughter suffering worse than her mother does.

The unique Michael Shannon- nominated for an Oscar for this performance- aka Bobby Andes is in charge of the investigation

Nevertheless, this interesting thriller is not just about making the killers pay for their abominable crime.
It is probably more about the remorse that will haunt Edward for not having tried to do more to save his family.

Granted, it is difficult to play the game of what if and chances are that he could not change the outcome of the horrible murders.
The only thing left now is to either forgive and move on or search for revenge, a payback that may be on offer.

Bobby Andes suffers from cancer and he only has one more year to live, hence he has nothing to lose.
He wants justice to be done in this case…

A Star is Born, written by Robert Carson and other…nine writers

A Star is Born, written by Robert Carson and other…nine writers

This film was nominated for six Academy Awards

There were no Golden Globes, BAFTAs or the Cannes Film Festival in 1938…
I guess

The nominations were for important categories, such as:

Best Picture, Best Actor in a Leading Role, Best Actress in a Leading Role, Best Director, Best Writing, Screenplay
It won the Oscar for Best Writing, Original Screenplay

In addition, it is an interesting, fresh approach to writing, with the paper on which the script is written presented at the camera.
Esther Victoria Blodgett is the hero of the show.

She becomes Vicki Lester and then Mrs. Maine.
However, before that, she is young woman living on a farm and dreaming about Hollywood and the movies.
She moves to California, hoping that she will act.

When she moves into this room, the manager is already shaking her conviction and insists on being paid…
In advance

When she starts looking for a job, the young Esther is confronted by notices that explain plainly:
There are 46,000 applications

Only a few thousand positions
Therefore, we have six times more people interested….

Figure it out!

These were not the words, but the message was nevertheless easy to understand- no work for you.
Esther meets a nice neighbor and the manager jokes about his role as a director, but when the protagonist asks for work, he gets mad.

How could he give her a job when he was unemployed, but after this initial anger, he finds her a place as a waitress.
This is where she encounters Norman Maine.

Her life is changed, for he is the one giving her a chance on a filming set.
Esther Victoria Blodgett becomes Vicki Lester because…

A Star is Born!

Moreover, it all becomes a roller coaster ride.
These were the times of the studio star system, when executives and moguls had contracts with actors that controlled the latter.

All the stars did was directed and scripted by the studio bosses and weddings, dates, separations could not happen without approval.
The media had access to scripted events and this is the case in the film, wherein the presentation is amusing.

Esther aka Vicky marries Norman.

However, while her career is flourishing, Norman Maine is perceived as a has been and avoided by colleagues.
In one scene, a couple of actors comment with acidity, cruelty and disdain on the fate of the former star.

Then we have a deplorable appearance at the Oscars, during the speech of his wife who was accepting the most important award.
Norman is an alcoholic.

A Star is Born is included on the list compiled by The New York Times:

Love Actually, written and directed by Richard Curtis

Love Actually, written and directed by Richard Curtis

                Just consider the cast:

Hugh Grant, Colin Firth, Emma Thompson, Liam Neeson, Martin Freeman, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Keira Knightley, Bill Nighy, Laura Linney, Alan Rickman, Billy Bob Thornton, Rowan Atkinson and more.
All the actors aforementioned are leading role stars.

Indeed, there are interconnected stories in Love Actually that all have about the same weight in the mosaic.
The point is plainly expressed in the introductory scene where the voice over suggests we should go to an airport.

It sounds preposterous and indeed quite a few moments in this film are, but at an airport one can see

Love Actually

Barbara Fredrikson is the ultimate expert on positivity and she has identified the ingredients in her book:

Positivity

These are: amusement watch comedies, even silly ones like Love Actually- interest, awe, inspiration, hope, gratitude, serenity, joy, pride and the element that is towering over them all is:

Love!

There are some good moments in Love Actually, although this viewer had expected more from such a terrific cast.

Maybe the best, included in the promos for good reason has the Prime Minister aka Hugh Grant…dancing.
Granted, this type of leader would never get office, for the large numbers of British would rather have a later day…communist in the person of the unlikeable, admirer of Hugo Chavez and others like him, the rather stupid Jeremy Corbin- I have lived in a communist regime and understand what this politician preaches.

The other moments that were charming involve two actors that perform in erotic fare and have to maintain a serious face throughout, even when he is told to massage her breasts and they talk about the…traffic.
Another amusing and repellent scene has Emma Thompson as the wife who finds a precious necklace in her husband’s clothes and is very excited, thinking this is the present she gets for Christmas.

However, when the gifts are presented, she opens her present only to find a …music CD that demolishes her.
The late Alan Rickman as the husband has bought that for another woman and this is causing a breakdown.

The splendid Bill Nighy has a more relaxed attitude in the role of a singer who has some outrageous positions.
During a live show, he says the right thing- teenagers; do not buy drugs- only to add: become singers and then you will get them free.

This performer has a song in a competition that he is unlikely to win and promises that, if he does win, he will go naked on live TV.

And he wins…

Collin Firth plays a charming- what else? - Writer who has a Portuguese-speaking house cleaner in a wonderful setting.

One day, almost all the pages of his manuscript are blown away by the wind and the beautiful girl takes her clothes off…well, most of them…and jumps into the lake to get the novel.
The writer falls in love with the woman who does not speak his language and he starts learning…Portuguese.

If farfetched and rather ridiculous, Colin Firth has the appeal to make the love scene in the restaurant somewhat plausible, even if the whole family and half of Lisbon appear to attend.
The conclusion is that there are episodes that you might enjoy in this film and others that will have you cry…

Oh, come on…give me a break!

13 Going on 30, by Josh Goldsmith and Cathy Yuspa

13 Going on 30, by Josh Goldsmith and Cathy Yuspa

                13 Going on 30 is amusing…

At times…

However, the only way to enjoy this light…very light comedy is to stop thinking and just relax and put your brain in sleep mode.
Conceivably, there could be a feeble message hidden in there.

It could be that the audience is invited to mediate on what happens between the ages of 13 and 30.
If we take this path, we could generalize this.

Perhaps the writers want us to think about meaning, Seneca and the notion that we lose so much time.

“It is not that we have a short time to live, but that we waste a lot of it. Life is long enough, and a sufficiently generous amount has been given to us for the highest achievements if it were all well invested. But when it is wasted in heedless luxury and spent on no good activity…”
We move on straight from…

13 to 30

Therefore, this film might be about Seneca, his brilliant thinking and indication that we need to be careful and appreciate time.

However, I am only joking.
This is just a comedy about Jenna Rink, who at the age of thirteen makes a wish and wakes up…

At the age of thirty!

Jennifer Garner is excellent in the leading role.
She is charming, exuberant and credible as a grown up woman who has the mind of a thirteen year old.

Jenna the teenager is appalled by what the adult has done with her life, since the age of thirteen.
If the innocent teenager was moral, friendly, if not perfectly honest- who is? - At least sincere most of the time, the adult Jenna seems to be a rascal.

She is arrogant, false, disloyal, mean, obnoxious and disliked by everyone around, and hated by most.
Now is the time to consider another alternative.

This comedy might be suggesting that we stop laughing- as if we were- and think profoundly about morals…
We are all so pure at the age of thirteen and then…poof

We wake up years later, for time flies by, and all the dreams we had may come true, for some, but in an altered format

Is it all about wealth?
For Jenna has a multitude of shoes, designer bags, dresses and apparently all a woman wants…

One of the prominent thinkers on prosperity, wealth, James Allen has explained in his classics that have sold many million copies:
As a Man Thinketh and The Path to Prosperity

That prosperity does not equal wealth, money and material things, but it has to do with character, values, meaning.
Jenna understands that she has done about all the wrong moves and taken flawed decisions in her life.

Alhamdulillah, there is Matt.
In addition, he can help.

In conclusion, one can either dismiss this as a mediocre comedy or look within and enjoy some of the themes.
