Habemus Papam by Nanni Moretti - 8 out of 10

Habemus Papam by Nanni Moretti

8 out of 10

The idea is challenging, the result is worth watching, if not overwhelming, the Pope is one of the most important figures in the world and has been for…what, millennia, his position as leader of the Catholic Church gives him power, he can be a negotiator, someone who can interfere in conflicts, but he can also be a ghoul.

We know of the horrendous popes of the Middle Ages – not all, of course – who got involved in disgusting schemes, had no qualms about sinning, and as for that, they sold indulgences, which was one of the main reasons why Martin Luther would decide to break away from the Catholic Church, with his Lutheran ‘sect’

There has been a long journey, and the Catholics have made some ‘progress’, they now admit the world is not flat, reversed some condemnations, do not see Giordano Bruno and others as messengers of the devil, at least I believe that they have gone beyond that, but they have a long way to go…

CS Lewis http://realini.blogspot.com/2023/09/surprised-by-joy-shape-of-my-early-life.html is one of the scholars that I admire, and he has quite a few books on religion, almost convincing this reader that God looks down upon us and the rest of it…he does make a good case, indeed, as good as it gets to use the title of a movie

One of the arguments would be if this astonishing intellectual is so transformed, Surprised by Joy, then the rest of us, who are much less capable, intellectually inferior should stop mocking and rejecting and embrace the doctrine…after all, there is Joy, Resurrection, Heaven, meeting Peter, Jesus and all

How Far Can You Go http://realini.blogspot.com/2023/08/how-far-can-you-go-by-david-lodge.html form Magister Ludi David Lodge will give you another perspective, the comedy looks at the shortcomings of being a Catholic, expressed in the title, because you cannot go very far, or anywhere with the doctrine

Some of the vies of the pope and the Catholic establishment have changed, but in important aspects, I think it is not a bit, in How Far Can You Go there is the problem of using birth control, which some decades back (and throughout its nearly a couple of thousands of years of history) was anathema, forbidden in any form, shape

From what gets out of the Vatican (maybe they are just rumors, gossip, fake news) the new Pope, Francis, who is such a sweet guy, with his old Renault (I mean seventy years old car or so), is in conflict with some of the old guard, the more conservative fellows, who want things to stay the same way, just like in AD 200

Pope Francis has said some things about homosexuals, suggesting tolerance, but they are a long way from being ‘Woke’, and then he has had his own blunders, with that bishop in Chile and some other crisis, which the institution has aplenty, what with the thousands of cases of abuse, and not some mild situations

They have had a horribly large number of priests taking advantage of children, no less, one prominent drama involved a bishop in Australia (maybe the head of the outfit there) but there are terrifyingly long lists of abusers and victims, and if the Holly Institution does something about it, it is still a mess, and not in the sense of religious service, but a complicated, long standing horror story that will not see an end soon

Then there is the problem of the celibate which is still the absolute law of the Catholic Enterprise, albeit there have been some noises, and attempts – it seemed that Pope Francis wants to change this inflexibility, at least in places where it would make such a huge difference, like say the Amazon, not the behemoth, but the forest

In remote locations, they do not have candidates, and it would make the difference between Being There http://realini.blogspot.com/2016/02/being-there-by-jerzy-kosinski-what.html and not having anyone at all – besides, from what I read in The Economist – that is the best source of media information, I started reading it some forty two years ago, and ‘undercover’, in the days of the Ceausescu regime, it was not something you did, but I went to the British Embassy, which housed on the premises the British Library and then I got my hands on what I still admire as spectacular reading and analysis – the Catholics loose the battle with other denominations, Pentecostals and such, that are loud, inventive, use modern technology, and get much more new adepts than the Pope’s beano

Now that I mentioned Being There, I will abandon the old train of thought – which anyway had little to do with Habemus Papam, so then I am justified to just jump off the highway, like in these action movies and take a detour – and say that I feel that Being There is not just glorious as a film in itself, with Peter Sellers, the cast in top form, but it does cast such a shadow over what is happening now in the world

In Being There, we have a gardener, Peter Sellers, who has done nothing his whole life, except well, gardening, and he has No education, he is in fact illiterate, and when his employer dies, it looks as if All Is Lost http://realini.blogspot.com/2016/01/all-is-well-or-all-is-lost.html but somehow, he meets some important people, and to cut the long story short, he may end up in…The White House, and you may say ‘come on, give me a break…How does that work’, and I would tell you ‘look at Trump’, and this orange ruffian is half the man the gardener is, and CNN said this morning that Biden is actually looking bad, in terms of statistics for next year, so god damn it, you think we will get this eejit again, next year?

Now for a question, and invitation – maybe you have a good idea on how we could make more than a million dollars with this http://realini.blogspot.com/2022/02/unique-in-world.html?q=unique+in+the+world  – as it is, this is a unique technique, which we could promote, sell, open the Oscars show with or something and then make lots of money together, if you have the how, I have the product, I just do not know how to get the befits from it, other than the exercise per se

I have read in Variety that Woody Allen is launching what he says will be his last movie, one which seems to have a raving review from Variety – it was something like ‘the best film since Match Point or Aphrodite’- but a production that had also attracted protests in Venice, where it opened at the festival…

There were some minutes of standing ovation - maybe six – and there have been other long anticipated creations there, The Killer, with Michael Fassbender in the title role, a Roman Polanski film, talking of controversial, even reneged film makers, Maestro, which has Bradley Cooper at the helm, directing the biopic.

Maestro has had its share of adversity, mainly because there is this new idea now that performers should stick to their own lanes – there is a very interesting in The Economist (where else) on the subject – and if the age of white men painting white on their faces is gone, the plan to have all doing only their race, segment looks flawed.

It was said that this would limit those that the plan is supposed to support – people with disabilities will then be forced to stay with the rare opportunities they are presented with – and some of the virulent protesters have been placed on the spot themselves…John Leguizamo was infuriated by a situation…

Only he is not from some place which gave a film the character he was playing and thus he has a history of acting in roles that do ‘not fit his profile’, and this would create a world where you have what used to be called (still is actually) typecasting…I saw a Brian De Palma http://realini.blogspot.com/2017/05/note-on-mission-impossible-directed-by.html documentary a few weeks ago

The fabulous director was talking about his movies, Scarface, Mission Impossible (the first one), and the screen trade in general, including one of his best, The Untouchables, how he came to use Kevin Costner, who came highly recommended by Steven Spielberg and others, and his interaction with some of the other stars

Robert De Niro was first reluctant to join, then he came in -I think De Palma says he would not learn his lines for some reason, but there may be some confusion here, Marlon Brando is of course a legend and a titan, but he is also the subject of many anecdotes, some told by Robert Duvall, available on YouTube, because he would not know his lines and they have had to put them everywhere, on the ceiling, on placards, so that he could read them http://realini.blogspot.com/2017/08/the-godfather-written-by-francis-ford.html - the Godfather and Robert Evans are in the recent megahit Barbie, though I could not make what they are saying in the Kendom…

Robert Evans has a book, The Kid Stays in The Picture http://realini.blogspot.com/2015/09/the-kid-stays-in-picture-by-robert.html in which he talks about his time as actor, producer and head of Paramount…he was the producer of some of the best 100 movies ever made, Chinatown, Rosemary’s Baby, Love Story and Godfather is argued by some to be The Best Ever, not just one a multitude…you find it in his book

Coming back to De Niro – it looks like I will not write a single sentence about Zelig, but who is to blame- he was wearing silk underpants for his part as the vicious Al Capone, who takes a baseball bat (by this time, I generally assume there is nobody still following, so I sometimes think to put in a spoiler alert could even be pretentious, pompous, as in I know you are still around and here’s taking care of you kid, but then somebody protested about a spoiler once, so what the hell, there is some kind of spoiler coming) and smashes the head of one of the mobsters that sit at a large, round table listening…

Type casting was the point lost some paragraphs back, and Sean Connery wanted to join this project – for which he would win a well-deserved Oscar, for Best Actor in a Supporting Role – because he had had enough with the roles of James Bond (he had the part at that époque, for quite a few of 007, and some of the best indeed) and so he was in for Something Completely Different, only it did not go down so well

Another spoiler alert, his character is attracted in a trap, with a supposed killer in his apartment, which he chases down the corridor, laughing at him, you come in with a knife, but then at the door, there is another ruffian, the latter with a machine gun and he sprays bullets that murder the personage…

However, Sean Connery himself has had inconveniences on the scene, he had had to crawl, and then something happened, I forgot what, but you could look for De Palma, which a fabulous gem, and you find about tis and so much more, besides, the director is such a phenomenal storyteller and a mesmerizing presence…

Sydney Lumet, another spectacular director, also wrote a book, Making Movies http://realini.blogspot.com/2015/05/making-movies-by-sydney-lumet.html in which he talks about Sean Connery and the difficulty of putting someone like Connery in the same frame with say Al Pacino, the difference in height between the two is enormous…incidentally, De Palma and Lumet clashed on two projects, Lumet was supposed to do Scarface, which landed with De Palma, but the former ‘stole’ another script, plus project from the latter, so we could maybe say they are even, worked hard for pictures they would not make

The Talented Mr. Ripley, screenplay by Anthony Minghella, based on the book by Patricia Highsmith – another note on this memorable work is here http://realini.blogspot.com/2015/09/the-talented-mr-ripley-by-patricia.html

10 out of 10

The Talented Mr. Ripley is included on the list of 1,000 Novels Everyone Must Read http://www.theguardian.com/books/2009/jan/19/1000-novels-comedy-part-one in the crime section, for Mr. Ripley may be talented (indeed, he is) but he is also a devious, Machiavellian character…

I saw some of the film again last night and I was thinking that we live in the Age of The Talented Mr. Ripley, in that we have so many individuals, more or less gifted in some way, pretending to be what they are not, taking advantage, rising in fact to the very top, just like Tom Ripley does in this majestic work.

It happens rarely, but this is one of the instances where both the book and the adaptation for the big screen are fabulous, Matt Damon and the rest of the mesmerizing cast are in top form, it was fun to see him in a film of twenty three years ago, just as I admired him more recently in Air, with his friend Ben Affleck

However, the magnum opus is Oppenheimer http://realini.blogspot.com/2023/08/oppenheimer-by-christopher-nolan.html an instant classic, as they said, and in my view, much better than Barbie, which is great, but does not have the magic, the power of the Christopher Nolan chef d’oeuvre, for which I…went to the cinema

It was for the first time in about twenty years – the last time, it was also an Anthony Minghella motion picture, filmed next door to my house, which was back then near Brasov, on the edge of the forest of Rosenau, but an immense disappointment when seen on the big screen of the Vitan Mall – and what a joy

Tom Ripley talks to Herbert Greenleaf, who is very worried about his son, Dickie aka excellent Jude Law, who is in Europe – the discussion takes place in America and most of the relevant personages are Americans, although the action takes place in Italy, for the most part – and appears to waste time and money

Herbert Greenleaf is a wealthy man and offers to pay for Tom Ripley’s trip to Europe, expenses and all, plus a bonus, if he somehow manages to convince Dickie to come back home, the young man is not rich, to say the least, and thus he is glad at the chance to go to Italy and try his persuasion skills on his former colleague

On a beach in Italy, Tom pretends to just see Dickie and recognize him, amazed at the ‘coincidence’…however, later, when they become ‘friends’ , he will confess and give the details of the conversation and the financing of the excursion and the goal of it – I hesitate on the friends idea nevertheless

One of the greatest writers of all time was Thomas Mann http://realini.blogspot.com/2021/09/the-magic-mountain-is-classic-that.html and he wrote something that has stayed with me till now and most likely for as long as I have awareness, can use my senses, on the subject of love and friendship, one of his characters is aghast at the frequency with which people around complain ‘their love is so great, there are no words for it’

This is ludicrous says the fictional man, for words like love, friend, do not have a correspondent in real life, where when you test those admirable, intense, everlasting, strong, immense feelings, you find that they do not pass the test of time or adversity, and we must look at fiction, art, to find them and stop exaggerating

Malcolm Bradbury is a sublime author http://realini.blogspot.com/2022/09/to-hermitage-by-malcolm-bradbury-author.html and in his spectacular To The Hermitage he has a large number of fabulous quotes, and one is this:

Fiction is infinitely preferable to real life…As long as you avoid the books of Kafka or Beckett, the everlasting plot of fiction has fewer futile experiences than the careless plot of reality…Fiction's people are fuller, deeper, cleverer, more moving than those in real life…Its actions are more intricate, illuminating, noble, profound…There are many more dramas, climaxes, romantic fulfillment, twists, turns, gratified resolutions…Unlike reality, all of this you can experience without leaving the house or even getting out of bed…What's more, books are a form of intelligent human greatness, as stories are a higher order of sense…As random life is to destiny, so stories are to great authors, who provided us with some of the highest pleasures and the most wonderful mystifications we can find…Few stories are greater than Anna Karenina, that wise epic by an often foolish author…now what about that?

Tom is charming and (again) Talented, so he wins the trust of Dickie and Marge aka Gwyneth Paltrow, but not the confidence of Freddie Miles played by the regretted and fantastic Philip Seymour Hoffman…that notwithstanding, when Tom is behaving in an outré manner, caught trying on the clothes of the man he may be infatuated with (again, this is not love, and besides, can you harm someone you really love…the problem now is of inflation, we use love for, well, anything, so it just means like, I guess, these days) Dickie becomes annoyed and then frustrated, to the stage where they clash

Let us not get into spoilers and just say that at least, Tom Ripley was gifted, but how can you explain the ‘success’ (if that is the name, if we are demanding, it might not pass the test either) of Idiot Trump, what does this guy have, to con seventy million people, and not just once, for he is within walking distance to get into the White House, after the elections next year, this morning, a poll gave him 49% and Biden one percentage less, god damn it, how is this possible, when it is not even conceivable to me?

Now for a question, and invitation – maybe you have a good idea on how we could make more than a million dollars with this http://realini.blogspot.com/2022/02/unique-in-world.html?q=unique+in+the+world   – as it is, this is a unique technique, which we could promote, sell, open the Oscars show with or something and then make lots of money together, if you have the how, I have the product, I just do not know how to get the befits from it, other than the exercise per se

In some ways this is the perfect motion picture, with a brilliant (if often excessive, in awe of dictators) director, fantastic cast, captivating story, alert rhythm, enticing propositions, a mix with everything in it, and yet, what it sells you is a lie, which is not on the scale of the ‘stolen elections’ scenario, but nevertheless, the story that John Fitzgerald Kennedy was killed by the CIA, Cubans, the Mafia or a combination of these is absurd.

Not absurd, it is wrong to put it that way, maybe just because it makes some ‘sense’, we are able to watch this long movie, and even get excited by it – my favorite discovery of these past years is Magister Ludi Kingsley Amis, I have read about twenty five of his masterpieces and have been elated, one of them is The King’s English http://realini.blogspot.com/2023/07/the-kings-english-guide-to-modern-usage.html

The glorious author looks at a number of words and how they have changed, lost their significance – take infamous, which comes from infamy, but had arrived at the stage where it is used for ‘famous’, and therefore, Sir Kingsley Amis says it is no longer recommended – and he mentions exciting, which because of advertising and media was used at such a frantic pace that everything was exciting, soap, toothpaste, shows…

JFK was a flawed man, I think I have read somewhere that he said ‘he must be with a woman (sleep) every other day or so’ and he did not mean Jackie (she was present in a documentary about Maria Callas, aired last night, and I have a feeling that she was not such a saintly figure either, and then what was all that fuss about her being gorgeous, she does not appeal to me in the least, as if this matters)

Notwithstanding that, he may have had the making of a great leader of the world (think of the Orange buffoon that may get elected, again god damn it, next year…compare him with JFK) and we could only refer to the Cuban Crisis, when humanity could have been terminated – what would Trump do in a major crisis, never mind that he creates them, he wants to bomb…Mexico, but how will we be doing when a self-obsessed ‘big brain and very stable genius’ self-proclaimed will be faced with Armageddon?

True, I answer my own rhetorical question and relax, for in really extreme situations, it may not matter, and we have brought ourselves on the brink collectively – I am reading a book on The Secret of Our Success, which argues that we ‘stand on the shoulders of hobbits, not giants, it is the wisdom of the crowds that took us where we are, so if it ends, it will not be the Confidence Man only, though he makes for a good paradigm

In the 1990s I was in the hospitality business – in short, I took part in the Revolution, and you will have a link at the end of this article, then met Michael Meyers from Newsweek, worked for the media and got a recommendation for the American Embassy and then offered them and the other entities, USAID, Peace Corps, American School, UK, Canada and other embassies tours – and met with a fellow, David Popp

His family came from Maramures, he had his father, no, I think it was the grandfather with him, and as he introduced himself as the client to go on the trip with me, after a couple of minutes he said ‘he is with the Secret Service’, which gave me a scare, for in our communist regime, that was associated with terror, oppression and all that, besides, Secret means secret, so how and why are you telling me that?

In the specialized motion pictures, you get that cliché ‘if we tell you, we have to shoot you’, but my client told me afterwards that the Secret Service is in fact the agency that offers protection to presidents and important officials (and curiously, it also deals with counterfeit currency, he would call me a few years later from Italy, where I think he was into that latter operation) and it is not really undercover, or not all that much

I asked David about JFK and the series of conspiracy theories surrounding the subject and he answered that it was Oswald Lee and there is nothing further to it, which is what I believe…if we do some psycho or just analysis, then it is true that with conspiracy theories all over the place, there is an allergy, bringing something to absolute exaggeration, hearing falsehoods ad nauseam, you refute even sensible theories

However, this is what the motion picture and Oliver Stone argue, making a solid case, as in they put together a puzzle that seems to fit, you start believing that all these Cubans (Joe Pesci in a flamboyant appearance) must have wanted JFK dead, and then the Mafia, which saw its dealings compromised, they thought they had access to Kennedy, there is another film that says they pushed women, or one in particular (it would not be Marilyn, do you think) and wanted to control the president through blackmail…

President Kennedy was in fact very sick, a documentary (actually, there must be more than one) explains how he was drugged to be able to stand the pain and basically function – if I remember this well, but he was horny as hell, though if we look at the depths to which the standards have plunged, with the Supreme Ghoul elected after he talked of ‘grabbing women by their pussy’, and with four years of bedlam, madness still a favorite to become the Republican nominee, with ninety one counts and four jurisdictions where he is on parole and say that JFK was Saint Augustine when compared with Satan himself, for those who believe in scriptures…that is exactly those who side evil these days alas

Henry V by William Shakespeare, screenplay by Kenneth Branagh, who directs and stars in the film based on Shakespeare’s play

10 out of 10

Shakespeare has long been worshipped as ‘Number One’, nec plus ultra, the zenith and Milan Kundera says – I think that it was in The Unbearable Lightness of Being http://realini.blogspot.com/2017/11/the-unbearable-lightness-of-being-9-put.html what a title - that we have to stop calling each and every smart ruffian a ‘genius’ and keep to Leonardo da Vinci, William Shakespeare and Albert Einstein, with a few more, because otherwise, the word will lose its meaning

In his marvelous The King’s English http://realini.blogspot.com/2023/07/the-kings-english-guide-to-modern-usage.html Kingsley Amis makes the same argument with many other words, one of them being infamous, which is originally associated with infamy, but it has come to signify (maybe it was just in his day, but I doubt it) famous, just like ‘we love this’ only equals we like this, since it is so frequently wasted on anything

Kenneth Branagh http://realini.blogspot.com/2014/04/hamlet-by-william-shakespeare.html made it on the cover of TIME – if I am not mistaken – some decades back, and it might well have been for his making of Henry V, he was nonetheless riding a big wave, celebrated as the new age Laurence Olivier, who has had his own adaptations of Hamlet, Henry V, which we could compare, or just say they were equally brilliant

Somehow, Kenneth Branagh has lived to the promise, especially in 2021 http://realini.blogspot.com/2022/01/one-of-best-movies-of-2021-belfast.html with his phenomenal, semi –autobiographical Belfast, yet, at the same time, he can give you some productions that simply irritate me, although I realize that I am not your best reference point, on the contrary, his appearance as Hercule Poirot is sure to make many cringe at the exaggerated, over the top, pompous take on the detective

Coming back, William Shakespeare has managed to give the public a fantastic, heroic, admired, copied figure in Henry V, whose shortcomings are mentioned – courtiers refer to his younger days and his erring, but he is now a sage, mature, courageous, wonderful leader – only I wonder how much is artistic license here

After all, ‘The Bard’ has contributed immensely – nay, he may well be in for more than 99% of the responsibility – in making the world sure that Richard III http://realini.blogspot.com/2023/07/the-lost-king-based-on-kings-grave.html was an absolute monster, with his deformities, the vicious character…

Yes, ‘now is the winter of our discontent…and all the clouds that loured upon our house/ in the deep bosom of the ocean buried’ these are among the most spectacular, euphoric, sublime lines that I know of, and Richard III is celebrated as one of the most overwhelming creations of humankind for good reason

Only the truth is the opposite, and demonstrated in The Daughter of Time http://realini.blogspot.com/2020/10/the-daughter-of-time-by-josephine-fey.html by Josephine Fey, a crime novel that sits at Number One (we are there again, it must be recorded somewhere, that we have reached literary Nirvana twice, talk of joie de vivre, savoir faire, it is all here) on the Crime Writers Association list

Josephine Fey shows you that Richard III was in fact the victim of ‘fake news’ avant la lettre, it is an awful myth that makes the colossal majority of humans count the king among the most reviled, when he has not killed his nephews, and he was in fact a good monarch, and the proper look at documents testifies to this.

Now the opposite may happen with Henry V, and if we apply the Woke, Cancel Culture norms, we are clearly going to find fault with the sovereign –Harvard Professor Tal Ben-Shahar http://realini.blogspot.com/2017/07/positive-psychology-on-youtube-by.html has the most popular lectures in the history of Harvard (you should in fact stop reading this [as if you are] and search for wise course) and he has quite a few mottos, and one of them is Be a Merit Finder, Not a Fault Finder…he also says learn to fail, or fail to learn

The main action revolves around the war with France, because Henry V says he is the king of England, but then he also has rights over France and thus the royal there and the Dauphin need to surrender, give up their privileges and just take off, leaving him in charge, which looks like a quite preposterous, vile attitude to take, though the French dauphin was quite offensive when he sent those insulting tennis balls…nonetheless, after Henry’s immediate successor is dead, the next in line ‘loses’ French territories

Evidently, we need to put things in perspective and it has been repeatedly indicated that it is nonsense and stupid to look at the Romans, ancient, medieval nations, leaders and pretend that they must have respected ‘human rights’, played by the rules we now have…what about the future generations then, how will they see the massacre of billions of tortured animals, killed so that we stuff our bellies…

One of the best qualified to look into the future is Yuval Harari http://realini.blogspot.com/2022/02/homo-deus-brief-history-of-tomorrow-by.html and you could do no better that read his supreme works, Homo Deus, Sapiens – A Brief History of Tomorrow and 21 Lessons for the 21st Century…

‘Fiction is infinitely preferable to real life…As long as you avoid the books of Kafka or Beckett, the everlasting plot of fiction has fewer futile experiences than the careless plot of reality…Fiction's people are fuller, deeper, cleverer, more moving than those in real life…Its actions are more intricate, illuminating, noble, profound…There are many more dramas, climaxes, romantic fulfillment, twists, turns, gratified resolutions…Unlike reality, all of this you can experience without leaving the house or even getting out of bed…What's more, books are a form of intelligent human greatness, as stories are a higher order of sense…As random life is to destiny, so stories are to great authors, who provided us with some of the highest pleasures and the most wonderful mystifications we can find…Few stories are greater than Anna Karenina, that wise epic by an often foolish author…’

It is rare to find a book that is listed among the best, in this case The Top 100 Best Books of the Modern Library https://poemeglume.blogspot.com/2023/08/top-100-modern-library.html and then see that the adaptation is also a master work, my guess is that you can find it with the TIME All 100 Best Movies, and if not, then it must be on the New York Times’ Best 1,000 films, to continue on this path, let me say then that if it is on neither site, then you do have it with my favorites, and this should be quod erat demonstrandum, both film and printed magnum opus are exhilarating and magical…

This in spite of the presence of Jon Voigt as in Ed in the narrative, Angelina Jolie’s father has been a remarkable actor, shining in Midnight Cowboy, Coming Home, Runaway Train and a few more works, only he seems to have been not just a bad father, but he is also a…Trump supporter, or this is anathema in my book

Ned Beatty shines as Bobby in Deliverance, just as did in his career, I will only mention The Network, one of the iconic motion pictures https://realini.blogspot.com/2017/04/the-network-written-by-paddy-chayefsky.html in which Ned Beatty is the head of the Network, who has to talk with the anchor that has gone rogue, he was something like what Fox has today, vicious, fulminant crazies, that a trial has recently showed that they believe none of the nonsense they spill on the air, for the deplorables that swallow it whole

Indeed, I was thinking about this division of America during the film, which was aired again last night, but also this morning, at the gym of the Caro park - now that is a very bizarre beano there, smack in the center (well, near it anyway) where they have a huge land, with just some buildings that have only three or four floors on it, while it is surrounded by high rise constructions with more than thirty levels

Furthermore, they even have some constructions that are in ‘paragina’, not in use, when the land is so expensive, and on the many parking lots that cover this strange thing, there are maybe thirty or forty (I did not really take a walk around the premises to count and see everything) cars that have been bought new, but now they just sit there, unused, unattended, this must be the mystery that beats the Panama Papers.

Coming back to the subject for a moment, Bobby, Ed, Lewis aka Burt Reynolds in splendid form, reminded one of Boogie Nights https://realini.blogspot.com/2017/05/boogie-nights-written-and-directed-by.html the classic chef d’oeuvre, and Drew aka superb Ronnie Cox want to take trip down this resplendent river

It is in the middle of what I would call Trump territory – I have an existential problem with this fella, and the seventy million that have voted with him in 2020, for if this is what humanity has produced, in the ‘greatest democracy in the world’, the man to lead our race, or at least those that live in the west, then we are doomed

There are quite a few themes in Deliverance that will strike various viewers differently, such as the clash between the city folks and the locals that live in the countryside, better said in the wild, a place that will soon be surrounded by the waters of an artificial lake, which will be used to produce electricity

The idea that we have to use green energy is thus there, but there is also that NYMBY attitude, let us have power without pollution, but then what about this magnificent river, or if we bring it up to today, they complain about the views that are spoiled by the wind turbines…let us get back to that leit motif…

Trump had this obsession (well, he is a man of many, but he suffers from Narcissistic Personality Disorder, so the main one is with himself) with turbines and kept making bizarre, stupid noises at his rallies, accusing the wind turbines that they kill the eagles and so many birds, which, coming from him is mostly a lie

The natives are a complex mix, on the one hand, you have this very talented child – who looks as if he is afflicted, and Bobby is expressing his pity…Milan Kundera https://realini.blogspot.com/2017/11/the-unbearable-lightness-of-being-9-put.html if I am not mistaken, Said in his brilliant The Unbearable Lightness of Being that we feel pity for those we consider underneath, and then there is compassion for the humans we feel to be at the same level with us

On the other hand, I have said that they would clearly vote with Trump, and what can be worse…I am also trying to be funny, as if there is still anybody around…when they stop in the forest, near the river, Bobby and Ed are taken hostage by two of these Trump voters, Bobby is made to squeal like a pig

Worse, he is raped and then the two locals move on to Ed, who would have to perform oral sex on one of these beats, with the shotgun pointed at his head, when Lewis is in the picture, we see he has landed in about the same spot as his companions and he has his bow with arrows, he is ready to shoot and that is a climax for you…what will happen next, will he hit a target, does he shoot, who will win?

Now for a question, and invitation – maybe you have a good idea on how we could make more than a million dollars with this http://realini.blogspot.com/2022/02/unique-in-world.html?q=unique+in+the+world    – as it is, this is a unique technique, which we could promote, sell, open the Oscars show with or something and then make lots of money together, if you have the how, I have the product, I just do not know how to get the befits from it, other than the exercise per se

Admission based on the book by Jean Hanff Korelitz - 8 out of 10

Admission based on the book by Jean Hanff Korelitz

8 out of 10

Warning – this note is not one you want to read to get a better idea about Admission, indeed, there may be every reason to stop right now…having said this, perhaps it is acceptable to muse on this Admission , or even more likely, admission in general…the Americans have just had a case in their Supreme Court, looking at the fairness of using a preferential system for universities and not just that, and the conservative justices have voted to end this, which was to be expected, seeing as Trump could nominate no fewer than three (because of an unscrupulous refusal to accept the nomination of Obama, the one who is now head of the Department of Justice, and then bending again the rules)

So the Republican senators refuse- lead by Mitch McConnell, the man who froze recently for nearly a minute, said Trump was responsible for the insurrection that led a mob to occupy the American Congress, but then would just let go of this massive attack on democracy – to even consider the candidacy of a judge nominated by Barack Obama, claiming that it is too close to the lections of 2016, which were months away

But then when it serves their purpose, and famous RBG dies, with just a few weeks before the elections that would in fact bring Joe Biden to the White House, they refuse to abide by the rules they themselves had imposed, and so they vote in yet another fundamentalist, a woman with many kids (she has seven, maybe ten, I do not know and do not care, but she has these views on abortion and issues that is clear in her own courtyard)

Indeed, these justices have just voted to end abortion rights – to be noted that I use just voted, and this is a repetition (annoying) and not even accurate, because it was not yesterday, there have been some months now – saying that the states have their autonomy and they will decide what is best, knowing full well that this equals draconian actions in the red ones, and thus it will a severe limitation of women’s rights

They use an unfair, flawed approach – incidentally, they have this justice Thomas, married to that loon, who is an election denier, her texts have been revealed, she is not just reprehensible, it casts a long shadow over the decisions of the husband, furthermore, the man had taken exorbitant gifts from a right wing donor

In the days of the communist system, under the tyrannical regime of Ceausescu, we used to look to America for inspiration, and if possible…invasion – I had a cousin (actually, as far as I know I still have him) whose dream was to wake up one morning and find that this realm has become an American state…

In the meantime, he moved to…Argentina, he is a citizen of that country, and since Latin America has some unsympathetic views of Uncle Sam (not all of them, obviously) especially in a country that had elected Kristina Kishner, we could speculate that the initial enthusiasm has given way to more than skepticism

Some cynicism would be in order, I am now disappointed myself, if Trump was catastrophic and unbelievable, at least there was that hope that the members of the cult would realize that they have been swindled and then change their adoration for realism and refutation, only they did not and they still love the ghoul

Speaking of Admission – or rather avoiding it – he has the same chance to be admitted into the White House after the next elections as Biden, and though the latter is clearly not the most inspiring choice you could think of, still, it is the difference between the sane and pure madness and evil, Satan is there

Evidently, if you believe in him, which ironically, the majority of the supporters of the Confidence Man does, they are evangelicals, and still, they do not see that this individual is a master of deceit, he lies as he breathes, and look at the ninety-one counts that he is charged with, like one commentator put it (in fact the name is Jones, perhaps Vin Jones, he is on CNN and has been an Obama advisor or official in that administration anyway) the simple question republican voters should ask themselves is ‘would you hire somebody who came to you, knowing he is charged with ninety one counts and he is on parole in four states?’

It is disgusting to see this change, the republicans were the ones that believed in ‘law and order’, would push back on Russia and the Soviet Union, they were the hawks and we liked that here, for they seemed to be more our allies than the democrats (albeit the latter group is not really on the left for Europe, though they have some extremes, Bernie Sanders and that caucus, Octavio or what her name is, the Representative from New York AOC, Alexandra Octavio Cortez, maybe…the Democrats would be maybe the Social Democrats of Europe, even if they could actually be to the right of those) back in the day

But now, what a disgrace, for it is not just Trump, there are seventy million fools who think like him (Hilary was absolutely spot on, they are deplorables in my book) and their leaders, Oh My God, the runner up, De Santis, said that the war in Ukraine is a ‘territorial dispute’, and clearly he would stop supporting the country and from their debate on stage, you could see that only Haley was for helping Ukraine, that other clown, Vivek is all for giving the country to Putin, in the same package surely with my country and the rest of the others territories that are not interesting for the likes of Trump and this Vivek ludicrous fella

Fight Club Screenplay by Chuck Palahniuk and Jim Uhls http://realini.blogspot.com/2020/07/fight-club-by-chuck-palahniuk-nine-out.html

Fight Club has become a cult movie, and we can still read about the making of it in contemporaneous articles – in Variety, one major performer was complaining that she did not get the role in the film, because Brad Pitt aka Tyler Durden in the adaptation would block her, the response was that the team had not promised anything, there had been casting, as is regularly the case and eventually someone else got the part – presumably, we are talking about Helena Bonham Carter aka Carla Singer

Since it was programmed last night again, I have watched some of it and thought that this is a challenging, dynamic, entertaining, thought provoking motion picture – you could read into the dialogue, the obsessions and give different interpretations – an attack on consumerism could be the impulsive buying of well, everything IKEA makes – incidentally, as far as I could tell, they have not been that ‘green’ here, they had bought some land in the neighborhood, but it has been used as a massive dumping ground (not by them, but still, they should be responsible owners and prevent that from happening)

Furthermore, before this property deal, there had been a small wood there, not The Yellowstone Park mind you, but still, more than a hundred trees, there was other vegetation, irises which are still growing in my garden, and on the streets of this gated community where I reside – as Anthony Quinn says in Lawrence of Arabia http://realini.blogspot.com/2017/07/lawrence-of-arabia-written-by-robert.html ‘I am a river to my people, and hence I volunteered and brought trees, plants, flowers from the fields to the blessed group of fucked up neighbors, that would show their gratitude by being morons and eejits – and all those trees and the rest of it would disappear, albeit the law prevents it

Speaking of this gated community, Fight Club was a good metaphor for it, and just as the movie (and possibly the book) is a look at the way human beings fight, show their violence – for real, or in the imagination of the narrator, for we could also go with the version where it all happens in the narrator’s head – the narrator is Edward Norton, a brilliant artist, though a difficult man to work with, Brian Cox was saying that Spike Lee had to put him (Norton) in his place on the set of The 25th Hour http://realini.blogspot.com/2020/10/84-out-of-100-for-25th-hour.html where the star was misbehaving

William Goldman http://realini.blogspot.com/2017/02/adventures-in-screen-trade-by-william.html is the author of Adventures in The Screen Trade, winner of two Oscars for the script of Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid and All The President’s Men, he writes about stars attitude, in one particular case, it is Robert Redford, who had convinced Goldman to work on a script about the Watergate Affair…

They had worked on Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid, which had been a massive success, but when it was released and made such a splash, Redford changed his mind over another project for which he had commissioned the same Goldman…never mind, this is a new idea, and the Oscar winning writer works hard on what is a very challenging affair, he has to talk to Redford, who is producing, through an intermediary, and then the producer talks to that person, who calls Goldman, it is pretentious, inflated and silly, but then after months of trying hard to make sense of what is a complicated, nearly impossible to put in dialogue and lines from the screen script, Goldman has the worst time of his life http://realini.blogspot.com/2023/08/all-presidents-men-by-william-goldman.html

Redford calls for a meeting in New York and when William Goldman goes to his apartment, he is met by the producer, who says ‘meet Mister Carl Bernstein, he will write the screenplay’…I mean, fuck you, you made me spend so much time, out in the colossal effort for such an impossible task, and now you tell me that you put someone else on it, never mind that this is the fella that had been through the whole thing, the hero, with Bob Woodward (incidentally, Woodward will be Redford and Bernstein Dustin Hoffman in the Award Winning classic) which is not what the brilliant Goldman writes, but I did

Dustin Hoffman is another case of stardom showing off, while on the set of Marathon Man http://realini.blogspot.com/2017/04/the-marathon-man-screenplay-by-william.html first he acts like a diva when he is asked to wake up in the night and see his brother, played by Roy Scheider, then take up a flashlight – Hoffman would spend excruciatingly long time in arguing about the flashlight (we are told that this was so that he keeps his macho image with his fans) and keeping the crew, his partner waiting for his artificial, bogus pretensions, and then he mistreats Sir Lawrence Olivier on the same premises

Sir Lawrence Olivier was sick, had a supporting role, but as Goldman insists, he was a glorious actor, doing his job under duress, while Dustin Hoffman wanted to emphasize that he has the leading role, perhaps trying to get over the awe inspired by the titanic Sir Lawrence Olivier, he (Hoffman) would drag the older artist for many rounds, trying to understand this or that aspect, impervious to the illness of the aging actor

In an interview, William Goldman said that he knows only of Paul Newman and Clint Eastwood as megastars that did not care to be adored and praised, it seems that for the rest (or most, maybe those that Goldman had known) it is necessary to hear how wonderful they are, and they react in strange ways…Julia Roberts was supposed to lead the cast in Shakespeare in Love http://realini.blogspot.com/2023/08/shakespeare-in-love-by-tom-stoppard-and.html only dissatisfied that Daniel Day Lewis could not be her partner, Shakespeare, because he had already started working on In The Name of The Father, Roberts abandoned the production and then, later, Gwyneth Paltrow will take the Oscar instead

This note is not really about the film or the book, instead, i would surely ramble off the topic, and muse over connected, or remote ideas - let us just say that i liked reading about Mohicans, apaches, Native Americans in general (though we had no idea about the term, when i was into those books) nd enjoyed the screen adaptation (how could one dislike it, seeing the subject, the cast, in particlar the mesmerizing Daniel Day Lewis, with his three Oscars, and Method Acting manner, which has recently come on the radar again, and Brian Cox mentioned Daniel Day Lewis with respect, but also to emphasize that he has ‚burned out’ at the tender age of fifty or so, criticizing this attitude, which indeed does take a toll on artists...i wonder what Denis Diderot  http://realini.blogspot.com/2022/12/jacques-le-fataliste-by-denis-diderot.html would have said about all this, he had a view on acting, which i understand is studied in university – at least in this realm – trying to see if it is better to ‚put your heart into it, or stay dettached when rendering a line or more...

Denis Diderot was using the example of freinds, who are very excited, passionate, intoxicated and inetense when they try and tell a story, near the fireplace, but their implication, the heart they put into it does not make the recital, story telling any better, on the contrary, there is mumbling, indistinct rendering and very, or most often shouting, which is supposed to make us see better the happening, feel the instensity, but the result is we are baffled, annoyed, amused when we are supposed to be horrified, and the list is long...thus the conclusion is that we need ‚professionals’, but those who are dettached, use their brains, not their other organs, they do not have to ‚feel they are in the role’

This is very often happening, indeed, i have stopped going at the theater quite a number of years back, becaseu most of the local celebrities (should i say actors, surely, in fact there are quite a few spledid ones, and a few come to the Downtown Club, and we see them) had taken to screaming and over reacting, taking the whole thing over the top; one of the glorified stars (she was in The Passion of the Christ) is there, one of the representatives of this affected, pretentious, supposedly intens, but just load and averbearing styule of putting audiences off, i am not going to look at antyhing produced by these amateurs

So the question might be where Method acting stands, to me it sounds like an exaggaeration, however respelendent the effcts can be, such a in My Left Foot http://realini.blogspot.com/2018/01/my-left-foot-based-on-book-by-christy.html, for which, like any serious Method Actor, Daniel Day Lewis had to do things with His Left Foot, becaseu the hero of the movie is a painter that would become famous and appreciated, but he could only use that memebr, nothing else

Still more worrying would be the moral issues, if it is an effort to get fat, such as De Niro for Ragging Bull, and we have many other cases, and get the test of the psysical transformation, then what about the sliding into the mind of mosnters (such as Monster with Charleze Theron in an Oscar Winning Role, for which she phisically had to be somebody else...these days, she says she would not gain 20 pounds or so for a role, becasue you cannot get them off anymore, i guess it has to do with age, what is she now, approaching fifty)

It is one thing to lose weight, after playing an obese fellow – there is always the prostethic solution, but we talk Method acting now – but what if you really go crazy – Jeremy Strong was apparently ‚becoming the deranged son http://realini.blogspot.com/2022/03/84-out-of-100-for-succession-too-much.html of the Logan emperor (based on Murdoch, Trump and other villains presumably) on the set, annoying the actor playing his father

I am an admirer of Aldous Huxley, whose Brave New World is inlcuded by The Modern Libary in its top ten novels, Chrome Yellow is another gem, but it is in Point Counter Point http://realini.blogspot.com/2016/11/point-counter-point-by-aldous-huxley.html that i think (i am not sure, but it could be checked if one is bothered...i am not, becaseu i do not think you are still here, i feel You are a mirage, the readr that goes past the few lines, and then there are just a handful that even touch on those first lines, it is not that people should read this, it is for AI, Artificial Intelligence, which will have the capacity to go through, well, everything written under the sun and in other galaxies, in nano seconds) that we have this inetersting character, an actress that was very famous...

At one point, she disappears, and freinds do not know what has happpppend to her, she had taken a role, one of a maid, or some other uneducated profession (sorry, this would get be cancelled, but then i am rthat a priori, nobody reads, ergo, canceled ahead of reading) and she had been on stage, but then when people went to her house, some servant would open, always, and the actress could not be reached

It was becaseu the female actor – this is what we call it today – had become the woman she played on stage, the Ultimate Method Acting, and when people were talking to this employee at the door, they were in fact addressing the actress, only she had changed her voise, the edcuated ,manner had given way to something unrecognizable, Cockney, who knows – in fact, the reader who has agood memory does

From The Hermitage we find that ‘Fiction's people are fuller, deeper, cleverer, more moving than those in real life…Its actions are more intricate, illuminating, noble, profound…There are many more dramas, climaxes, romantic fulfillment, twists, turns, gratified resolutions…Unlike reality, all of this you can experience without leaving the house or even getting out of bed…What's more, books are a form of intelligent human greatness, as stories are a higher order of sense…As random life is to destiny, so stories are to great authors, who provided us with some of the highest pleasures and the most wonderful mystifications we can find…Few stories are greater than Anna Karenina, that wise epic by an often foolish author…’
