The French Connection based on the book by Robin Moore, with Gene Hackman in the leading role http://realini.blogspot.com/2017/06/night-moves-written-by-alan-sharp.html

10 out of 10

This is an iconic motion picture, one of the Best 100 of All Time, with a stupendous Gene Hackman dominating the big or small screen, in the leading role of Jimmy Doyle aka Popeye, for which he has won one of his two Oscars…the other was for the astonishing Unforgiven http://realini.blogspot.com/2020/07/one-of-realini-top-20-best-movies-ever.html Gene Hackman was nec plus ultra

However, it is interesting to see how things have changed, and some of them have not, in that they could not make a French Connection by saying that the aggressive Doyle is a positive character, he would be the villain, in a movie made now, given that from the start, he kicks and hits a suspect, granted, the latter had just used a knife against his partner, Buddy Russo aka Roy Scheider- this is another glorious artist, the star of All That Jazz http://realini.blogspot.com/2017/08/note-on-all-that-jazz-written-and.html

Our hero – maybe the anti-hero – had to extract important information from the underworld, but this is what they all say, and they justify violence using the philosophy of Bentham, do something to benefit the most people, and if that affects one individual, then you have to go ahead…there is this example they have in lectures available online, from Yale I think they are, in which they ask students to consider a test

You have a railway line and a train is coming, if it takes one track, it will kill one person, on another, there are more, I forgot the details, but it is in the power of the individual to change the course, so what would you do…things can be more complicated, and this is not as obvious a choice as it sounds, in circumstances where, fro instance you have a group of thugs who pressure, torment or worse a single man, who has the keys or access to the vault of the bank, from which they want some millions of dollars.

In theory, it is a few, maybe as many as fifty five ghouls that would rejoice with stolen money… we can even multiply this and I am thinking of Trump and his cult members, their happiness would be to steal elections (they have tried it, and their spiritual guru is facing indictments now, but the fools do not care, they want to dismantle the FBI, DOJ anything that stands between the White House and their dinosaur)

What do we do then, let the world explode, because an idiot and a sick fool with Narcissistic Personality Disorder has to play with the red buttons, pretend he is an adult and the ‘very stable genius’ he claims to be?

Let us come back to the French Connection, where they are using a technique from Influence http://realini.blogspot.com/2016/05/influence-by-robert-cialdini.html a classic of psychology by Robert Cialdini, exposing the six principles, social acceptance, reciprocity, respect for authority, the one that applies in this instance appears to be reciprocity, though it could well be a combination of factors

Doyle seems to be frantic, always tense, ready to fight, you would say definitely a neurotic character – this reminds me of Scoop http://realini.blogspot.com/2018/07/scoop-by-evelyn-waugh-adapted-for-bbc.html by Evelyn Waugh, one of the greatest writers, with a series of extraordinary books listed among the masterpieces of history, Brideshead Revisited, Decline and Fall, The Loved One, vile Bodies, Black Mischief

The list longer, but nevertheless, in Scoop, we have a journalist that travels to Africa, to cover events there, and he works for Lord Copper, some of the dialogue has made history and I have read about it in The King’s English http://realini.blogspot.com/2023/07/the-kings-english-guide-to-modern-usage.html by His Majesty Kingsley Amis – when telling the employer something authentic, an assistant he has says ‘definitely Lord Copper’, but when it is not true, the same man only dares ‘up to a point, Lord Copper’, which is both excruciatingly funny, and so deep, truthful, for this is what happens

We can see it with this tragicomic spectacle in America, with Trump -such a leit motif here, some criticize this ‘obsession’, but I retort that this is arguably the most important show that we can watch, for once the gorilla (and they are such nice animals) is back in the White House, then all hell will break loose, and we will all be affected, unless you live on the space station, and even then you are not safe, the creature will sell this part of the world to Putin, for peanuts and some compliments from the czar, and then he will avenge what he sees as ‘witch hunt’, but it only an effort to make the criminal pay…

The most tempting thing is to say I cannot believe it still, after all these years of a permanent circus, this degradation of America – let me put here the red states, but they are many, then they could well be enough, again, in 2024, even when the ‘popular vote’ is lost by millions, to get the pterodactyl anointed ‘king of the free world’- which has this basic flaw, that they have an electoral system that allows for the minority to rule, in that Hilary Clinton would have been president in 2016, in another democracy, where they count all the votes, and the one who has more wins, well, not so fast in the USA…

This was supposed to be about The French Connection, but then it was about the US, which even now has a major drug problem, but as I insist ad nauseam here, there is another one, a potential calamity that awaits us all…

Now for a question, and invitation – maybe you have a good idea on how we could make more than a million dollars with this http://realini.blogspot.com/2022/02/unique-in-world.html?q=unique+in+the+world    – as it is, this is a unique technique, which we could promote, sell, open the Oscars show with or something and then make lots of money together, if you have the how, I have the product, I just do not know how to get the befits from it, other than the exercise per se

As for my role in the Revolution that killed Ceausescu, a smaller Mao, there it is http://realini.blogspot.com/2022/03/realini-in-newsweek-participant-in.html

Cyrano de Bergerac by Edmond de Rostand - 10 out of 10

Cyrano de Bergerac by Edmond Rostand http://realini.blogspot.com/2022/01/nominated-for-2-golden-globes-cyrano.html

10 out of 10

This seems to be the most popular play in the history of France – just like representations of Agatha Christie, was it The Mouse Trap, have been on stage for so many decades, constituting a record – and we have had so many adaptations http://realini.blogspot.com/2014/06/cyrano-de-bergerac-by-edmund-rostand.html

One has Steve Martin as a modern day Cyrano de Bergerac http://realini.blogspot.com/2017/03/note-on-roxanne-adapted-by-steve-martin.html who is instructing the fireman who is helplessly in love, but unable to say anything smart how to seduce Roxanne aka Daryl Hannah, and we have also had the majestic (back then) Gerard Depardieu as the man with the big nose.

In the beginning of Monty Python’s Life of Brian http://realini.blogspot.com/2017/03/monty-pythons-life-of-brian-bymonty.html we have another ‘Big Nose’, but that is a humorous exchange, as a prophet was talking about ‘blessed are the cheese makers’, and an argument ensues, and suddenly you have ‘Big Nose’

Nevertheless, this note is more about the ‘making of’ Cyrano de Bergerac, as it is presented in a fabulous film I have seen last night, after which I looked for an entry to attach my note to, but since I have not found Cyrano, Mon Amour aka Edmond, I thought well, why not attempt to connect some thoughts to…Cyrano

In the plot of Cyrano Mon Amour, Edmond Rostand is a married poet, who has a very unsuccessful premiere, after which he becomes depressed and it looks as if his family, the wife and two children, would have a hard time, since he is not able to provide as an author, but things may change when he meets Constant Coquelin

The latter is portrayed by one of the greatest actors in the world, Olivier Gourmet, seen in Those Who Work http://realini.blogspot.com/2020/03/those-who-work-aka-ceux-qui-travaillent.html among other splendid films – Constant Coquelin is a flamboyant, curious, courageous, impulsive figure

The meeting of the two might lead to the creation of Cyrano, albeit it would be a long way, and other ingredients are necessary, for the project is plagued by many misfortunes and there are challenges from the start, such finding financing, which is provided by two men, if their favorite will star in the performance

They have a…brothel, called something with Poules aka Hens, and Maria Legault had been one of the sex workers employed by the two, they appear to have a ménage a trois, in what is otherwise a quite conservative narrative, at least for French standards, when the hero is about to have an affair, he says…no

Jeanne d’Alene will be the muse that Rostand needs, albeit he loves his wife, the latter had ceased to inspire him, she believes in him, has supported the author, but it is the intense inspiration, the awe and admiration that Jeanne feels for Edmond Rostand that would set him on (artistic) fire, and there is more…

This reminds one of The Honeymoon Effect, explained in the Harvard Positive Psychology lectures http://realini.blogspot.com/2017/07/positive-psychology-on-youtube-by.html of Professor Tal Ben-Shahar, the most popular in the history of that fabled institution, this is what tends to happen after two years of marriage, or relationship, when tedium may set in, and then partners may look for someone different

Jeanne has a connection that is similar with the one in the would be Cyrano, she corresponds with a friend of Rostand, but the fellow is not gifted, just as we have this situation explained in Cyrano de Bergerac, and the author is in fact writing letters to Jeanne, which would eventually land in the hands of the wife

However, unlike in most films and stories we know, the husband is honest when he explains the situation, the fact that he is not unfaithful, for yes, Jeanne inspires him (as mentioned, her case will emerge in the play) but this is exclusively a platonic relationship, he loves his wife and he is grateful to her…

Challenges abound, for Coquelin is banned from the stage, and edict from the Minsiter of Culture is clear, he must not act, for he has broken some clause with the Comedies Francaise, and furthermore, the star of the show has an accident and the premiere may be jeopardized, cancelled and then all the effort would be in vain

This reminds me of the story read recently about the making of Shakespeare in Love, which had had financing based on the participation of Julia Roberts, but she wanted Daniel Day Lewis to be Shakespeare and when he had to decline, because he had already been involved in In The Name of The Father, she abandoned the whole thing

The producers had Hugh Grant, Colin Firth and others, but Julia Roberts behaved unprofessionally, to use an euphemism, after all, Gwyneth Paltrow would win the Academy Award for this very film…anyway, spoiler alert, Jeanne knows all the lines, and at the last moment, she saves the opening and the whole play…

El Cid by Frank Fredric, Philip Yordan, Samuel Bronston http://realini.blogspot.com/2014/10/the-cid-by-pierre-corneille.html

We live in a world with gruesome leaders (in fact, I was about to put the word between commas, and then I thought I might well put this long line of words instead) and thus stories, legends like El Cid could help to remind us of different standards, role models, for it seems that billions of fools and deplorable – this is a good label, that Hilary Clinton used and would not help her in the race, but it was true – aspire to be like Putin, Xi, Trump, Bolsanaro or Lula, MBS, and there is a long line of ghouls we can put here

El Cid was the epitome, the ideal fighter, a noble that was loyal, when offered the crown of Valencia, he refused to get the power, and accepted instead in the name of his sovereign, a king that had betrayed him, and showed himself (the royal) unworthy, but since the hero had pledged his honor, it did not matter that this ‘majestic fraud’ was undeserving, the protagonist fought against foes and won…

There is a battle between two Gods, we are told at one point that the God of the Christians will fight against the God of the Muslims – this being Spain, at the time when the two faiths clashed with each other – but whereas his royal master refuses the offer of help from another religion, El Cid is for collaboration, ecumenical understanding – if that is the expression, I know it is used for the rapprochement between various Christians denominations, but I am not sure if it is useful in this context

We have a Paradigm shift in our times, the model of El Cid is no longer in the vanguard, for the definition of this fundamental change we could look at Vernon God Little http://realini.blogspot.com/2016/06/vernon-god-little-by-dbc-pierre-divine.html The Booker Prize Winner by DBC Pierre, which has one character explain to Vernon, in words to this effect ‘you enter a room and find that a stranger has a finger up your grannies ass, what do you think, and the answer is bastard, I will destroy you, but then you see that the man had in fact tried to save your aged relative, from a deadly disease, what do you say now, oh, so much gratitude…this is paradigm shift for you…’and the change we experience today

I was talking in the Caro sauna earlier, about the new indictments that Trump is facing, and the rise in popularity as a consequence of being exposed as a criminal – actually, he is a serial criminal, still not found guilty in court, but hey, nobody is reading this, anyway, if anybody is, and he is a cult member, adoring the Orange Clown, well then, fuck off – that takes him to poll numbers that say he has a fifty percent chance

Jesus Christ Superstar http://realini.blogspot.com/2023/05/jesus-christ-superstar-by-andrew-lloyd.html how can this be...I remember some decades ago, when a Democratic senator was trying to run for president, they found that he had had an affair with a secretary, or somebody, and then poof, it was all over for the man, who would have to retire from the competition, apologize to everyone and depart in disgrace

Whereas now, you have a monster that had said before the elections that he won (how absurd this is) that he ’grabs women by the pussy’, and still, those mother fucking ‘evangelicals’ felt no qualms about voting for him…yes, they did because God works in mysterious ways, and then this unapologetic atheist would deliver the goods, absolutist supreme justices – who by the way use unjust means, they interfere in New York and other states, because they want guns all over, and then they say they allow the fundamentalist states to adopt anti-abortion laws that could have been designed by Torquemada

This is not the only abhorrent cult leader in the world, it is true though that we have seen him at his game, from next year it would be exponentially worse, if he gets to the top again, and it will affect the whole world, from Ukraine to Taiwan…for Ukraine, he has the best solution, evidently, he is ‘the very stable genius’, self-proclaimed, but never mind, he will end it in twenty four hours, as with the other problems he had promised to solve (Health care, Obama care) he never does, but in this situation, we could be sure that he would allow Putin to take the land and more, he loves tyrants, he wants desperately to be one, and who knows, maybe his wish will come true, and he will cut off aid to Ukraine

Influence http://realini.blogspot.com/2016/05/influence-by-robert-cialdini.html by Robert Cialdini is a classic of psychology and the wondrous author looks at cults, gives readers the example of the cult that moved from California to Guyana, where the leader asked the members at one point to…commit suicide, and most of them did, hundreds of people died, with some exceptions, some who had not fallen into the Social Acceptance trap, for it was a disastrous result for those who followed the example of the others

It looks as if this is what could happen, in a society where the bravery, devotion, spirit of self-sacrifice, honesty, munificence, wisdom, love of learning, integrity of El Cid, are replaced by a model of cheating, narcissism brought to extremes, the idiot that could rule the world in 2024 suffers from Narcissistic Personality Disorder – there is another classic, The Six Pillars of Self-Esteem http://realini.blogspot.com/2013/06/six-pillars-of-self-esteem-by-nathaniel.html by Nathaniel Branden...

The ultimate expert on self-esteem writes that those who display arrogance, show off, do not have the confidence they want to project, the real trust in oneself is shown when one is relaxed, serene, does not behave like a rooster, or like a Trump…again, the model we should look up to is El Cid, and watching the movie would help

The Death of Ivan Ilych by Leo Tolstoy http://realini.blogspot.com/2023/03/anna-karenina-by-leo-tolstoy-one-of.html - 10 out of 10

The Death of Ivan Ilych by Leo Tolstoy http://realini.blogspot.com/2023/03/anna-karenina-by-leo-tolstoy-one-of.html

10 out of 10

On the one hand, this http://realini.blogspot.com/2013/07/the-death-of-ivan-ilych-by-leo-tolstoy.html is a magnum opus, one of the greatest books ever written – I think it is included on the list compiled by the Norwegian Book Club, which had asked the luminaries of our age, Nadine Gordimer, Salman Rushdie, John Irving, Umberto Eco and others to name the crème de la crème – but on the other hand, I am asking myself ‘why on earth do you need to get on with this morbid subject?

Especially since I have been here before, but then, there is this version on YouTube, read by our greatest living artist, Victor Rebengiuc – in the same league with Jack Nicholson http://realini.blogspot.com/2014/10/la-musica-by-marguerite-duras.html we have had George Constantin, a divinity – and so I said let us hear this, only to see that death is so close and I could be Ivan, soon enough

Another great Russian, Fyodor Dostoyevsky http://realini.blogspot.com/2016/07/the-possessed-by-fyodor-dostoyevsky.html has had the misfortune to be sentenced to death, and facing the firing squad, he divided his last three minutes in…three, one to say goodbye to his family and friends, another to pass his life in front of him, and the last to admire a ray of sunshine, falling on a bell tower nearby

At least this is the version I remember, as it was told (or maybe I modified it, with a failing memory, however implausible it would be, seeing as I have repeated it more than one thousand times) by our sublime professor of literature, Anton Chevorchian, this is where my humble gratitude needs to be expressed, in one of his classes…now I try to remember if we ever had ‘world literature’, or the teacher was such a dissident that he talked about the world, in a communist class in the Ceausescu regime…

Be that as it may, Fyodor Dostoyevsky is pardoned in the last minute, or maybe the czar had just wanted to scare him with a bogus death moment, and then he lives, Alhamdulillah, and writes about surviving -whereas Leo Tolstoy tells us about the agony of Ivan Ilych, his denial of God, the suffering, humility, the forgetfulness of the others, colleagues think of the venues opened for their promotions, by The Death of Ivan Ilych, the moribund has not had the chance to live as we must, married a woman he did not love, with whom he fought, and at the end, it looks as if ‘his life had not been what it must have been’

Dostoyevsky gives us the advice that can change our lives, when we read one of his masterpieces http://realini.blogspot.com/2020/06/crime-and-punishment-by-fyodor.html for in front of death, we see that we must live the moment – as Tolstoy would put it in one of his most memorable quotes, which I now have inscribed on a short ‘the most important moment is now, the most important person is the one in front of you, and you need to make that person happy’, words to this effect – and that is crucial

The author of Crime and Punishment realized in front of the executioners that he would rather live on an island, nay, a bare rock, in the middle of the ocean than die – this is something he inserts in his chefs d’oeuvre, we have the man that faces extinction think of that, but we know this is what had happened to the author himself, it is based on acute reality, and we better think of this and use it in our lives

We also have the Stoics to learn from, and apply their deep understanding, for we have the moment, but that is the only certainty http://realini.blogspot.com/2020/08/stoicism-stoic-approach-to-modern-life.html and we have to seize the moment…in The How of Happiness by Sonja Lyubomirsky , we are told about a drawing in which a man is in the office and thinks of golf, in the next window, he is at the golf club and he thinks of…sex, but while he has sex, he thinks of the office, notwithstanding that this was a joke, it reaches to a serious problem, for this is happening to many of us, however different in manner

Trying to reach Maximum Experience, create conditions for Being in The Zone is a way to cope with death – Flow http://realini.blogspot.com/2016/10/flow-by-mihaly-csikszentmihalyi-this-is.html is a classic by the co-founder of positive psychology, Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, and it details the conditions – you are in control, nothing else matters, there are clear goals, it is an autotelic experience, feedback is constant and immediate, time changes, minutes seem long hours and vice versa, challenges meet expectations

What I would suggest to Ivan Ilych is to look at ‘Happiness Activity No 7: Learning to Forgive –keeping a journal or writing a letter in which you work on letting go of anger and resentment toward one or more individuals who’ve hurt or wronged you’ and the rest of the wondrous book The How of Happiness http://realini.blogspot.com/2014/07/the-how-of-happiness-by-sonja.html but that is just in jest

It is easy to say, oh, you need strategies to cope with adversity and trauma, when the man is dying, it is a different game, and I shudder to think of it…brrr, let me just run away from this and mention the example of incredible forgiveness, for the same How of Happiness, where a young woman was killed in south Africa, but her mother would travel there, and talked to the killer, and she not only forgave him, but she would start a sort of ONG with him, if I remember well, anyway, that is extreme forgiveness for you

Let me just mention Man’s Search for Meaning by Victor Frankl, yet another classic of psychology and you find there the importance of having meaning, a notion that is there, in the title http://realini.blogspot.com/2013/05/mans-search-for-meaning-by-victor-frankl.html the experience of the Nazi camps is used in writing this

My Week With Marilyn by Colin Clark http://realini.blogspot.com/2017/08/some-like-it-hot-written-by-billy.html

9 out of 10

My Week With Marilyn is a captivating, fabulous story, about one of the most dazzling, popular, complex performers in the world, the troubled Marilyn Monroe, looking at a week in her life, as the title makes clear, as she was filming (well, most of the time making life hell for Sir Laurence Olivier aka Kenneth Branagh) The Prince and The Showgirl, which is incidentally based on a narrative from our realm

It looks as if the Prince in that comedy, portrayed by Sir Laurence Olivier, has been inspired by King Carol, one who had played a rather negative role in the history of our land, installing a dictatorship, deposing his son, Michael, one of the greatest sovereigns we have had, who also has a part to play in the Prince and the Showgirl, which does not refer to Romania, but looks like the royals from here have served the story well

Marilyn Monroe was insecure, addicted, and she was extremely difficult to work with, at least on the set of this film, and she admits as much, asking for forgiveness at some point, albeit the script looks as if the author is on her side – perhaps influenced by new Woke conspectus and the truth that men have been worse than domineering, telling women what to do, and abusing their positions – and we hear her side

Nevertheless, Sir Laurence Olivier was a perfect professional, a wonderful human being, not just a supreme actor, we learn from a holy text about the movies that he was ready to sacrifice for his art, Adventures in The Screen Trade http://realini.blogspot.com/2017/02/adventures-in-screen-trade-by-william.html by William Goldman details what happened on the set of Marathon Man, wherein the British star had a supporting role

Sir Laurence Olivier had been invited to be a part of the cast, and he accepted, although he was very ill, and everyone could see that…Dustin Hoffman had the leading role, and acted with arrogance and carelessness, taking the co-star on long walks, probably trying to impose his position as more important in the structure of the film, and effort to get over the intimidation he must have felt, only his partner was in evident pain

Marilyn Monroe http://realini.blogspot.com/2017/06/bus-stop-based-on-play-by-william-inge.html had had a very disturbing childhood, she had been moved from one foster home to another – or is it from one orphanage to another – and this had had an impact on her – we have learned that from Sigmund Freud, although modern psychologists seem to reject his theories en masse, the notion that sex has such a paramount role for children, penis envy and the rest of it have fewer disciples – and we can see it in this narrative

She complains that she had been married three times already, and wonders why every man that she loves would eventually run from her…she is married to Arthur Miller, the playwright, and he had come with her to England, but their relationship does not work, she has found some of his notes, and he says that he regrets having married her, tells Laurence Olivier that he cannot work and would return to the USA eventually

We are to think that the star has had an intimacy with Colin Clark aka Eddie Redmayne - winner of the Oscar for Best Actor in a Leading Role http://realini.blogspot.com/2017/08/note-on-theory-of-everything-with-eddie.html for The Theory of Everything – however platonic, I think I get that he had only seen her naked, they have been fond of each other, but it was not sexual, as in ‘going all the way’, but I may be wrong

This has anyway reminded me of my own Week With Marilyn, and while scenes were shown on the screen, I might have missed it and reminisce about the intimacy I have had with our first Miss Romania, who was not exactly Marilyn Monroe, albeit an actress herself, but on the other hand, there were many more weeks – in a total of maybe nine months – and we got closer than just holding hands

It did not end well, I had to see a psychiatrist and Everything, Everywhere All At Once became vain, while in Sofia, I have even contemplated suicide – I had acted wrongly, perhaps pushed by her as well, maybe it was the only chance to be like Colin Clark, acting as a sort of ‘support’, or what they call today ‘emotional support animal’, a label that is abused these days, by people who take all sorts of creatures on planes, because they need their companions, and now they joke on Late Night Shows, once they end the writers’ strike

Just like Colin Clark, I took the job of ‘assistant’, for this local star – I realize now that I am not coming back to the purpose of the note, or maybe just to mention that Marilyn Monroe had adopted the ‘Method Acting’ technique, which has made some headlines recently, Cox was complaining about Jeremy Strong and his immersion into the role, on the set of Succession, and mentioned Daniel Day Lewis http://realini.blogspot.com/2018/01/my-left-foot-based-on-book-by-christy.html who was one of the best

From his role as the painter who can only use His Left Foot, Daniel Day Lewis has transformed himself – using his left foot and being the character – but the point Brian Cox is making is a valid one, for Laurence Olivier was aghast as the questions Monroe was asking, and then Daniel Day Lewis has burned out, and retired at a young age from the film business…in my case it worked and it did not, for there has been a ‘love story’ – it would have to be analyzed, but we arrived at the end of the space here – but with a rather sad ending

Sunt O Baba Comunista aka I Am An Old Communist Hag by Dan Lungu http://realini.blogspot.com/2022/03/realini-in-newsweek-participant-in.html

The reasons why I write this note is that I think the bane of this opus brilliant, I have seen the writer (at least I think I did) on TVR Cultural and liked his poise, stand (albeit, the other day, they have had on the same Cultural Channel an incredibly loathsome guest, talking about AI or something, somebody I know from the sauna, where he peddles conspiracy theories and has a ghoulish attitude altogether) and this is such a relevant issue.

In other words, this note is not really going to help you in the least, if you look for opinions, hesitate before taking this, or the other novel, unless you appreciate tangents and hints, for I am just focused on what An Old Communist means, and I have the ‘chance’ to encounter commies all the time and thus appreciate the efforts to expose them, satirize, laugh at them, hell, anything to take down these bustards

The other day, one Old Communist (tough not a hag, but a motherfucking male relic) was making the apology of communism, telling the other people in the sauna that he had always had hot water – there is a period now when they make checks on the installations and thus different neighborhoods do not have running hot water and I think this is what brought the subject up – in the commie days, and he elaborated…

The Old Hag lived in the center – he made clear it was not a villa, but hey, fuck you old fart, who lived in the center of the city, tell me – and then he moves on to food, which was absent for the hoi polloi, and insists that he had always had nouriture, and attributes this plenty to…’having had one supplier’, I mean god damn, this is unbelievable if you are from here, a Martian will, of course buy this wholesale…

I Am An Old Hag is thus wonderful in looking at the issue of these bastards, first of all, the nomenclature who had had all the privileges and now act as if what they had had, food, electricity, hot water, the basics, were there for the rest of us –they were not, we had to queue for, well, anything, bread and milk, never mind bananas, of other such exotique items, they were not part of reality…

Therefore, to hear these Old Communist Hags selling the propaganda of the old regime – or Xi’s China, Putin’s Russia for that matter – is disgusting and we need art, culture, movies, documentaries that will present the truth, expose what was going one, for those who do not know and listen to the mother fuckers who lie

This goodfella http://realini.blogspot.com/2019/06/goodfellas-based-on-book-by-nicholas.html is not an isolated case, there are many others, such as the doctor who is a leader of the Union of health care workers at a major hospital in this city, who is embarking…Putin, telling us that the Russian czar is just as loathsome as Zelenski

I mean, this corrupt fucker has made tones of money in the old regime, from corruption, he boast of the properties he has – and I have asked him, what if the Russians come here, which would be the next, logical step, if they were to defeat Ukraine, and they storm into your lavish property in Voluntari, a hugely expensive place, where the doctor has one of his multiple investments, and they take it from you…

Thus, meeting the relics of the communist days is no joy, in fact, it is awful to think that the future could be a commie one, if China becomes the predominant power, which is so likely, if America falls, and look at Trump, his cult and what they will do next year, if the idiot is elected, according to the polls, a fifty- fifty chance

I am reading a very good book, Corruptible by Brian Klaas, and among the interesting experiments and amusing details, we have this key element, the fact that we have advanced because we are very apt to learn from others – oops, there is confusion here, this detail in fact is from The Secret of Our success by Joseph Henrich – and we are good in seeing what to add to various foods, examples are given with ash in dishes that need it, the spices that have killed bacteria, and much more, but what about now

How is it possible to elect a leader – even writing this word is difficult in the context – that is sure to bring about chaos, possible Armageddon, how could Republicans abandon their credo, the bedrock, load star of their doctrines and choose as to form a cult, worshipping one who is close to Satan as possible, if the devil exists…they used to be in favor of law and order, but now when it comes to Trump…

An example form Corruptible by Brian Klaas is when he looks at Putin and the macho displays we all now, with shirtless czar on the horse, of fishing, which have nothing to do with the abilities of a leader – Brian Klaas says that if you saw your doctor in such situations, you would change him, and not just that, you would call the Medical authority, and yet, the argument in this book is that power corrupts, and at the same time, psychopaths, the bad people are attracted to positions of power, and the research of the author extends from Madagascar to police stations where you have felons running the show…

Ceausescu was such an example of a terrible man reaching for the top and then using the absolute monarchy to inflict pain and destruction, which is what America and the world will experience, if Trump is again in the White House – oh, my god, I cannot believe I write this and it is even conceivable, after all that pandemonium and mayhem

The Hateful Eight written and directed by Quentin Tarantino, writer and director of Reservoir Dogs http://realini.blogspot.com/2020/06/reservoir-dogs-written-and-directed-by.html

8 out of 10

Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction are among the greatest films ever made, perhaps in the top ten, and we could forget the perhaps, if we talk about this cinephile, it would be there, albeit there are another one hundred that are also with the best ten or twenty, Lawrence of Arabia, Some Like It Hot, Leviafan and many more

However, having just declared that two of the master’s creations are nec plus ultra, I must disagree with, well, the rest of the civilized world, and say that Kill Bill http://realini.blogspot.com/2017/06/note-on-quills-with-geoffrey-rush-kate.html does not fit into the best 1,000, never mind praise it as one of the astounding achievements – in Variety, it was one of the best action movies ever…

The same thing with Inglorious Bastards, the other Kill Bill, although Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is the kind of production to which I say ‘acum mai vii acasa’, now that is something that comes much closer to the original masterpieces, the aforementioned Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction, with an explanation for that

It has to do with high expectations – and positive psychology tells us that we have to lower them, the expectations – and the problem of being a…Maximizer, which is detailed in the classic of psychology The Paradox of Choice http://realini.blogspot.com/2015/07/the-paradox-of-choice-by-barry-schartz.html by Barry Schwartz, the alternative we want is to be a Satisfizer, someone who wants good enough

The Maximizer is somebody who wants every motion picture to be on the level of Reservoir Dogs, expects perfection, and is hence dissatisfied when this does not materialize and I am now thinking of Regression to the Mean, which is explained by Daniel Kahneman, the only psychologist that has won a Nobel

Not for psychology, for there is no such thing – do I recount that Einstein was against having the Nobel given to Freud and indeed, looking on the net for once, something I am too lazy to do normally, I find that ‘Albert Einstein, who won the Physics Prize in 1921, refused to endorse Freud's nomination for the Medicine Prize in 1928’- but for Economy, and he writes about a meeting with fighter pilots

Daniel Kahneman was talking about some errors, and their commander explained how they corrected the mistakes, that was because he shouted and put them in their place, only the psychologist tells about Regression to the mean http://realini.blogspot.com/2015/07/thinking-fast-and-slow-by-daniel.html

The Hateful Eight seems to be good enough, we have a cast that is the crème de la crème, but then at least one is over the top for my book, Tim Roth, who is nec plus ultra in both Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction, adopts here a style that is pompous, exaggerated, obsequious, affected for my sensitive, foolish ears

Then there is too little, or too much going on, the buildup is masterly, surely, for those who know better, cultivated, erudite cinephiles that see the value like I don’t, but then we reach a climax and all hell breaks loose…yes, this works splendidly in the two classics, and I agree with the retort ‘so what the hell do you want?’

We could go back to Blink the Power of Thinking Without Thinking http://realini.blogspot.com/2013/05/blink-power-of-thinking-without.html by the psychologist who is arguably just as influential as Daniel Kahneman, Malcolm Gladwell, and say that from the very first images, one’s opinion is formed

There are important themes, no question about it, racism, the major portrayed by Samuel L Jackson is discriminated – here I realize that he acts with gravitas, the performance is good, maybe excellent, but not scintillating, as dazzling as in Pulp Fiction, where he has quite a few (or better said many)lines that are now part of the history of cinema, with the Ezekiel ‘strike down upon you with furious vengeance’ and the other talk, about the burgers in Europe and the metric system, and the epiphany of the end

‘Beauty is in the eye of the beholder’…’a thing of beauty is a joy forever, there is nothing either good or bad, but thinking makes it so…’ and we could continue down this path, with what luminaries have said about this, but then we would fall in the mistake satirized by our Magister Ludi, Andrei Plesu, in his speeches

Our great philosopher and performer http://realini.blogspot.com/2022/05/despre-ingeri-by-andrei-plesu-10-out-of.html is ridiculing the people who, just like me, keeping quoting – you invite him to have a tuica aka a plum brandy and he says ; let me tell you about this, Calistrat Hogas has a line on tuica’…

Anyway, the pint is that I expected The Hateful Eight to take me aback, and it did not, although I must say that I looked at a portion of it these days, as it was included in the HBO program and on another channel, and it did not seem that bad…nonetheless, it did not overturn my initial verdict either

Shakespeare in Love by Tom Stoppard and Marc Norman http://notesaboutfilms.blogspot.com/2017/07/note-on-shakespeare-in-love-written-by.html 10 out of 10

Shakespeare in Love by Tom Stoppard and Marc Norman http://notesaboutfilms.blogspot.com/2017/07/note-on-shakespeare-in-love-written-by.html

10 out of 10

Shakespeare in love was in the program again last night and could not miss the chance to see this motion picture, that is so exhilarating, complex, amusing, romantic, inspired, splendidly acted, no wonder that it has won seven Oscars and so much more, including for the disgraced monster Harvey Weinstein

I have read in Variety an article about the making of the film, which could have been cancelled altogether, seeing that it got off to a bad start, when Julia Roberts was involved in the project – and she had been the reason why a studio had approved the financing and then they travelled to England to work on it

Julia Roberts had been made famous by Pretty Woman, but the producer who tells this story had hindsight and thinks she was still too young at the time, I think she was twenty five, and exuberant, sure that she will have Daniel Day Lewis as her partner, because he was so handsome and funny, and she wanted this to happen

She has sent him a dozen roses with a note ‘Be my Romeo’, only the fabulous actor could not do it, because he had already been engaged and I think he had started work on In The Name of The Father (another tremendous achievement, Daniel Day Lewis has never acted in a flop) and could not do Shakespeare…

Nevertheless, Julia Roberts was very upset, did not pay attention to the actors invited for the casting, neglected Fiennes and some other wonderful men, that were not well known at the time, but would become huge names later, such as Hugh Grant and Colin Firth, and this nearly destroyed the prospects of the movie

One day, when they asked for Julia Roberts, they found that she had gone…hence, we have Gwyneth Paltrow in the leading role, winning an Oscar for her performance, and what a dazzling tour de force that is, albeit she is yet another bizarre personage off the stage, first we had that crying at the ceremony, then later, she became involved in an outré outfit, I think it is called Goop, the subject of jokes at late night shows…

Shakespeare aka Joseph Fiennes is in love, as we find from the title and Viola de Lesseps aka Gwyneth Paltrow is his muse, albeit she wants to be on stage and disguises herself as a man, in order to get a part…

Their love is impossible in the Middle Ages, when the rich would not intersect with the poor – indeed, there are plenty of jokes and felicitous situations, dogs attacking on stage, for the fun of the public, and then when they ask ‘who is he’, the answer is ‘nobody, the author’- the actors, writers, did not enjoy the special status they have today, at least the super stars, who have impressive fortunes…

It is true that while Johnny Depp was worth more than half a billion dollars, something we have learned from the mediatized trial, wherein he accused his wife and she said he is a wife-beater, she defecated on his bed, he intoxicated himself often and so on, there are many arrests who cannot make a living…

There is in fact a strike, for the first time in more than fifty years – I forgot how many – writers and actors walk out at the same time – the last time when that happened, Ronald Reagan was the head of the union of writers and Bob hope made a joke along the lines of ‘people with a swimming pool refuse to get out of it’, or words to that effect – and I am frustrated because I cannot watch my favorite Seth Meyers show

This is just one of the many wonderful things about Shakespeare in Love, the fact that it does not propose an impossible, sweet, corny, banal take on the story, pretending that William Shakespeare and Viola could overcome the obstacles and somehow elope, or just convince everybody that they are made for each other

Indeed, one of the best known economists of the present is Thomas Pickerty http://notesaboutfilms.blogspot.com/2020/07/91-out-of-100-for-capital.html and he argues that in the old days, the encounter between the personages of Jane Austen would have been impossible, never mind the marriages that we celebaret in the pages of Pride and Prejudice, Emma, Sense and Sensibility…

This imaginary Shakespeare – the genius existed, but he did not encounter this lady, and the affair is just imagination – finds the inspiration he needs, and maybe we can celebrate the end of their romance, if we listen to Andrei Plesu http://realini.blogspot.com/2014/05/obscenitatea-publica-by-andrei-plesu.html he quotes another luminary and says that the ‘good life is not auspicious for the creator’ or words to that effect, thus, if the greatest author had found happiness with a resplendent woman, he would have been to comfortable, tempted to savor life’s joys to sit at the table and give us so much bliss http://realini.blogspot.com/2018/07/romeo-and-juliet-by-william-shakespeare.html for eternity

The Importance of Being Earnest by Oscar Wilde http://realini.blogspot.com/2014/02/the-importance-of-being-earnest-by.html - 9 out of 10

The Importance of Being Earnest by Oscar Wilde http://realini.blogspot.com/2014/02/the-importance-of-being-earnest-by.html

9 out of 10

Oscar Wilde was a flamboyant, brilliant, amusing, inspired and for at least part of his life an unhappy, unfortunate intellectual, albeit an example comes to mind, mentioned in the ravishing The Science of Happiness – How Our Brains Make Us Happy and What We Can Do To Get Happier http://realini.blogspot.com/2013/10/the-science-of-happiness-how-our-brains.html by Stefan Klein- involving Rosa Luxembourg

As far as I can remember – or imagine I do – Rosa Luxembourg wrote some letters, or maybe in her diary, about the joy, bliss she felt, how the flowers were wonderful, the sun shining or words to that effect, expressing felicity, but she was writing that in…prison and the message is that we can be happy, even in the most adverse of circumstances, and indeed, one of the lessons of happiness is “Happiness Activity No 6: Developing Strategies for Coping-practicing ways to endure or surmount hardship or trauma”

We find this in the fundamental, inspirational, life-changing The How of Happiness http://realini.blogspot.com/2014/07/the-how-of-happiness-by-sonja.html by Sonja Lyubomirsky and surely, Oscar Wilde knew something about that, having to cope with trauma, because he was alas born in an age when homosexuality was not just frowned upon, it was punished with jail and the playwright was imprisoned.

‘Ignorance is like a delicate exotic fruit; touch it and the bloom is gone…The whole theory of modern education is radically unsound…Fortunately in England, at any rate, education produces no effect whatsoever…If it did, it would prove a serious danger to the upper classes, and probably lead to acts of violence in Grosvenor Square…’ in other words, Oscar Wilde was not just writing excellent comedy, he was also serious

The comedy also looks at falsity, the need to keep appearances, the flimsy snobs that would only have their offspring marry money and status – Lady Bracknell tells Gwendolyn that the young woman will be ‘informed’ when she is to marry, Jack Worthing could not marry just like that, he has to have a fortune, an important position, and with that lacking, there is no way that any marital plans could come to fruition…

One of the most influential books now is Capital in the Twenty first Century by Thomas Pickerty, and a documentary on that explains that the literature of Jane Austen http://realini.blogspot.com/2020/11/emma-by-jane-austen-10-out-of-10.html and so much else does not reflect reality, in that a man from the aristocracy would never (well, perhaps there was a one in a million chance of that happening) cross paths with a woman from a lower class, or vice versa, never mind have them marry…

Oscar Wilde was evidently preoccupied with the veracity of appearances, the continuous lying that took place in society – indeed, it is of great concern today, as ‘fake news’, have invaded the internet, and you have billions of people immersed in conspiracy theories, voting for gruesome ‘leaders’, because they buy into their narratives, from Putin to Trump, Lula or Bolsanaro, Modi, Maduro, MBS, Xi, the list is long

The writer had to hide his sexuality, albeit he was such a dazzling character that he gambled at one point, and lost badly in court, one of a series of bright minds that had to suffer because of their gender – Alan Turing comes to mind as another outstanding example, but we also have Marcel Proust, Somerset Maugham and so many others – now we find from a book like the Co-Winner of the 2019 Booker Prize Girl, Woman, Other http://realini.blogspot.com/2022/06/girl-woman-other-by-bernardine-evaristo.html - by Bernardine Evaristo that ‘gender fluidity’ is the thing and gender a great lie of civilization

Both John Worthing and Algernon (which is the name of the company where I am a junior partner by the way, buy with abandon from us) Moncrieff lie, the former to get away to the countryside, and the latter to travel to the city, but Algernon is unsure of his origin, and because of this ambiguous state (which would surely have a connection with Oscar Wilde, in that he has had to act as a heterosexual, to seem to obey the law, while he was actually a ‘sex offender’ for the times) he could not marry the woman he wanted

Other works of Oscar Wilde have impressed this reader, one would obviously be The Picture of Dorian Gray http://realini.blogspot.com/2015/01/the-picture-of-dorian-gray-by-oscar.html a dark, horror story, a meditation on age, art, the dedication of the artist, the way we can rejuvenate ourselves through Flow, by plunging into activities that absorb us, that we do because we love it, that get all our attention, for which we have clear goals, that offer constant, immediate feedback, where challenges meet skills

You find the whole strategy in Flow http://realini.blogspot.com/2016/10/flow-by-mihaly-csikszentmihalyi-this-is.html a classic of psychology by the co-founder of the new science, Positive Psychology, Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, who has studied what brings people to The Zone, Peak Experience, and found that it is challenging, autotelic, testing experiences, where nothing else matters and time is changing, just like Einstein has explained ‘Put your hand on a hot stove for a minute and it seems like an hour…Sit with a pretty girl for an hour, and it seems like a minute…’- a book that can bring an epiphany…

Duios Anastasia Trecea by Dumitru Radu Popescu - 8 out of 10

Duios Anastasia Trecea by Dumitru Radu Popescu

8 out of 10

This note must start with a warning – there is little, if anything here about the opus itself, and this will probably connect only very vaguely to Dumnezeu aka the author, if this is not wrong, I think I recall he was nicknamed God, when he was the president of the Union of Writers, in the ‘good old days of communism’…yesterday, there was this goon that made the apology of communism at the Caro sauna

You see that I am already departing from the ‘subject’, and continue with the…sauna, where this seventy years old fool was arguing that the power had never been cut at his flat, mentioning he lived in the center – but then who did, expect the nomenclature or acolytes of Ceausescu, he had always had meat, giving as reason that he had had the same ‘source’ (fuck you, you idiot and monster, it was your ‘connections’) and generally presenting that époque of madness and stone age as one in which you could ‘get by’

Not incidentally, the stupid commie is using the towels to wipe off…the soles of his shoes, just before he may step into his limousine, for he most likely has one, the winners in the old regime just happen to amass big fortunes in this one, the large properties have been transferred to such old guard, banks gave millions in loans to those who never pay them, just giving out the wealth of all, to the few, and the attitude of the cretin towards the towels we need to use is familiar, it was that the vented socialist system with everything belongs to all, in practice it meant that ‘some animals are more equal than others’ http://realini.blogspot.com/2022/01/animal-farm-by-george-orwell-magnum.html

The name is outstanding, Sweet Anastasia would not do it justice, I do not know what English word would be the equivalent of duios, which has a magic ring to it, and to apply it to a passing girl, young woman is poetic…indeed, some of the plot in the book can be appreciated, this Anastasia would take a brave stand, she is appalled that a partisan is shot dead by the Nazis and then left to rot in the middle of this village

It is just that the author is associated in my mind with the rotten system and hence unable to produce a worthy epic, which is nonsense, and I will refer as so often to Intellectuals http://realini.blogspot.com/2014/06/intellectuals-by-paul-johnson.html by Paul Johnson, a marvelous work that details the gruesome aspects in the characters of Leo Tolstoy, Henrik Ibsen, Ernest Hemingway, and we therefore conclude that to be a worthy Intellectual, one must have some Marquis De Sade within, if a small one

However, what prompted thoughts of Dumnezeu were the experience I have had with his…son, if I am speaking of the correct individual – the advantage in playing this game, and writing for fun, even peddling unverified innuendo is that few, if anybody reads these lines, and then if somebody does start, then they soon abandon, Alhamdulillah

I have met the son, but do not remember the name – was it Crista – when in Predeal, on holiday, and he played chess with me, allowing me to win, because he had been told to, I would later learn that Marius http://realini.blogspot.com/2015/10/jaeger-by-rhea-rene.html  who was a common friend, wanted to ingratiate himself, and win sympathy from my sister and hence wanted an encouraging atmosphere

Some other version, or maybe identical (I am not bothered to check), of the story is told at the link above, the son of God aka the head of the union of writers, was not happy with something or everything at home, and eloped, inviting some friends – actually, he called Marius, who had been a mate, we were connected with the latter – with him to Sinaia, where we drove in a Volkswagen Passat…

Marius was and is a German citizen and in the days of Ceausescu that was a major benefit, for the mad dictator wanted as much hard currency, dollars, pounds, as he could get and thus visitors to the ‘commie paradise’ were encouraged to spend their cash in ‘dollar shops’ and had all sorts of privileges, Marius could drive his car when all the others were banned, on pretense of snow and just because a tyrant does whatever he wants, look at Putin and his invasion of Ukraine, in the name of an appalling lie

At least on the way back, we drove in a surreal landscape, because nothing was allowed to move, expect for the very few, we had a large portion of the road covered with snow, and we could not tell where the road is, expect in the portions where luckily, trees were planted on both sides of the track, and we then knew we had to try and make our way between them…it was so incredible, I still remember it…

That was some sort of benefit, but also a handicap, for foreign students were loathed by many, they had access to what the ordinary people did not (forget about what the vile clown from the Caro sauna claims, that the commies had it all good, he did, because he was one of the pigs or dogs, if a smaller one, not at the head table) and this gave them the chance to make gifts to beautiful women, who would choose stockings, coffee, cigars from the dollar shops (not all of them, evidently) over the smart, attractive, revolutionary humans like myself – in the next few lines I will brag about my role in the Revolution that killed the despot and brought the likes of the Sauna Creature in power, in a change that was so much worse than in the rest of Eastern Europe, the Czech people had Vaclav Havel and we had Iliescu and the miners coming down to the capital, in what was the Stone Age brought to the present…
