Prospect is
an interesting, appreciated by the critics film – it has a promising metascore
of 68.
Sophie Thatcher
is impressive in the role of Cee, a teenager that would eventually dominate the
narrative of the film.
She joins
her father, Damon aka Jay Duplass of Transparent fame, in prospecting for gems
on a distant moon, sometime in the future.
One shortcoming
– in the view of this cinephile – seeing that we are talking about a long time
in the future, is that the equipment, the arrangements that these people use
seem rather obsolete.
True, it
could well be that instead of progressing, humanity would return to less
sophisticated means, as so many dystopian, pessimistic novels and books would
suggest.
Only in
that scenario, our descendants would not be populating the long distant shores
of the universe, would they?
In that
sense, the tubes connecting Cee with her father and later to Ezra aka the very
good Pedro Pascal look like something they used before Leonardo da Vinci,
albeit we must also think about money.
The film
did not have access to the usual huge purse, that Avengers and other such flics
have at their disposal and therefore the special effects and props they could
use were limited.
Very early on,
the contractors on this moon, walking in the toxic forest meet with Ezra and
they have to negotiate an arrangement, but when Damon confronts the competition
for gems, a shootout ensues.
The father is
dead.
It is thus
a confrontation between the daughter and the injured man – he has been hit in
the conflict.
On the one
hand, Cee would want to take revenge for the death of her parent and eliminate
what is surely an enemy, but on the other hand, she is facing a serious
challenge.
They may
find solutions to the problems, one of which is crucial for they have no
vehicle, space ship or whatever to fly out – if that is the correct word for
transgallactic trips.
Therefore, they
reach a truce, where the girl still keeps a – rather rudimentary looking – gun pointed
at the man that tried to explain what had happened, which is anyway something
she knows.
Cee is very
resourceful, intelligent – Emotionally, which is most important and in the
traditional sense – brave, resilient, kind, generous, forgiving – in short, she
is a real Role Model.
Very soon,
the new temporary allies meet with other people – again, if the description is correct
– and they talk to Ezra and ask him to give them the girl, in exchange for some
advantages.
She waits a
little for the opportunity and runs - maybe for her life – from the tent where
her transaction was to take place and manages to escape, after eliminating one
adversary.
This is not
all, for other, arguably, even more deranged figures appear and it is a fight
for life or death.
Cee would
prove her loyalty to her newfound friend – indeed, the only companion and
support in this awful place.
