Brave New Jersey by Jody Lambert
Tony Hale –
of Veep fame- is excellent as the mayor of small town in New Jersey, where an outside
event has a major impact and forces the inhabitants to confront some of their
issues, find solutions to some problems and even Redemption in a few cases.
Although an
entertaining comedy, there are some serious themes and the mirth gives way to
fear, if not terror in various scenes of the film, as the characters except and
even imagine that they see the invasion of the…
Martians
Orson Welles
has had a brilliant idea called War of the Worlds and he has scared with that
much of America, people listened to the radio and thought that the fiction was
real and the dramatic facts presented in the show actually happened.
In the
debut of the play, there seems to be an unknown object from out of space which
has hit earth in…New Jersey – hence the even more dramatic perspective of those
in Brave New Jersey who thought the Martians are right around the corner…
Indeed, at
one point they have even calculated that the Space Invaders would arrive in
their town at about 4 a.m.
As the
humans and the reporters sent to the place of the crash approach, a few snake
like creatures come out and…oh! Cries and shouts….the aliens are making dozens
of victims first and then many more…
People are afraid
that they will be burned and that all of America is scorched and destroyed.
The play
was brilliantly written, produced and the effect was tremendous through a
country which was terrified by what it heard at the radio, much like Trump
supporters believe that whatever their crazy, orange buffoon tweets is the
Truth, Absolute…
The Truth, Whole Truth and Nothing but the
Truth
Mayor Clark
Hill is i8nfatuated with Lorraine Davison, but her husband is pushing him around,
Paul Davison tells the official what he must put on the sign at the entrance in
the town and astonishingly, at one point early on, he tells his wife to…shine
his shoes and she…
Does it!
When the broadcast
terrorizes the people of Brave New Jersey, the nefarious Paul Davison shows his
mettle when he takes the car, as his wife and two children had packed their
bags and went outside, and decides to just…abandon them!
Lorraine seems
to get close to Mayor Clark Hill, only to distance herself again and bewilder
the poor, amusing man, who keeps a famous notebook with him, wherein he writes
down important ideas, things to do.
One of the
funny moments includes one group of confused, agitated horrified inhabitants
who try to understand what happens, given the tragedy described on the radio,
the increasing number of atrocities and the apparent imminent destruction of
the planet;
What will become of us?
It is terrible
We are all going to die
Maybe if we fight
The sheriff must know!
This is when
the sheriff walks through the door and says:
What is happening?
The tragedy
that scares people – false, as it would turn out to be – brings a Silver Lining;
for some relationships are broken- as they should have been – Paul Davison is exposed
for what he is.
Peg Prickett
becomes close to, they kiss, embrace and maybe falls in love with Sparky, while
Chardy Edwards shows his limitations, a macho attitude wherein he pretends he
has rights over the attractive woman.
Given that
he considers Peg his fiancée, this means he has rights over her and she must do
what he says…making one think of MeToo.
Groups of
people from Brave New Jersey arm themselves to fight…the incoming invasion, but
deluded as they are, they find the wrong enemies; Peg even imagines that a poor
Polish boy has the head of one of the monsters and she nearly attacks the
innocent child.
This is not
Dr. Strangelove or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb, but it is an
entertaining comedy.
