The Hurricane, based
on the book by Rubin 'Hurricane' Carter
The Hurricane is an excellent motion picture about the fight
of a determined, brave, strong, gritty, innocent, resilient boxer that has been
wrongfully sentenced to a few life sentences.
When he was only a boy, he has defended a friend who was
about to be molested by a vicious pedophile, who turned against Rubin and
brought the boy to the edge of a cliff where he was ready to push and kill him,
when the struggling child managed to save himself by using a knife.
In racist America, instead of praising the boy and
sentencing the adult, the court placed behind bars the boy, up to the age of
twenty one.
In this institution for juvenile offenders, Della Pesca, the
epitome of evil, a devil with human face becomes the enemy of the hero and this
harpy would not stop until he would destroy his opponent.
Once out of the detention center, Rubin Carter becomes a
reputable, strong, skilled boxer.
He is portrayed by the legendary Denzel Washington, who has
the usual magnificent performance.
Rubin Carter is indeed so good that he is called The
Hurricane, given that other fighters cannot stand in the way of this phenomenon
of nature.
He has a strong will, determination, will to power,
perseverance, openness, perspective that would eventually bring him to the top
and later on, help him survive.
He is such an accomplished boxer that the world championship
is within his reach, for he sends to the floor the best in his category, Middle
Weight.
Alas, all these hopes come tumbling down when he is accused
of murdering three people in a bar, based on false testimonies, forged
documents and the racism of the police force, prosecutors and finally judges.
Other boxers and celebrities rally to his cause, Cassius
Clay, Ellen Burstyn and others, but to no avail, for twice the higher courts
maintain the judgements, discouraging the hero, who is now protesting by
staying up at night, not leaving his cell.
When he was brought in the prison, he refused to wear the
uniform of convicts, knowing he is innocent and therefore he was sent to
isolation for a month.
An African American teenager learns about his cause and
together with his Canadian friends bring hope to the victim of Della Pesca and
a vicious, racist justice system.
They not just move near their new friend, The Hurricane, but
make all the efforts to reopen his case, find witnesses, flaws, forged
signatures- one by the villain of this story.
A wonderful motion picture about friendship, dedication,
loyalty, Justice and its opposite, humanity, Courage, kindness and love.
