Criticizing this motion picture could be difficult in that
it is a comedy, well intentioned,we should not expect comedies to be all about
World War III Asa wonderful as Dr. Strangelove or How I Learned To Stop
Worrying and Love the Bomb.
As the final credits roll on, it is clear that one of the
purposes of this feature - in fact one would say the main one - is to celebrate
difference, gay marriage, relationships and the children that can be raised in
these families.
Photographs of maybe dozens of lesbians, gays and their
happy children are on display on the big screen.
On that measure, the film must be lauded.
There are also some good comedy moments.
Alas, not many.
Not enough to make this a historical moment.
It can remind one of La Cage aux Folles, presumably the
better version is the original, as it happens most of the time, although the
Hollywood adaptation has Robin Williams and Gene Hackman in the cast.
Steve Coogan is Erasmus and Paul Rudd is his gay partner,
Paul.
Gay used to mean happy, cheerful and I guess it is not
happenstance that it now stands for male homosexuals.
Because most of the time, Erasmus and Paul are happy,
flamboyant, joyful, partying, creative and surrounded by friends.
Of course, they also have differences, some of them effervescent
and sparkling, although not excessively humorous.
They are having a lavish party, enjoying their freedom, the
excess brought about by wealth, when a boy of ten comes to Erasmus with a
letter explaining that this is his grandson.
The audience has seen previously that the father of the boy
was arrested and this is also stated in the letter.
The two gay men have a confrontation about this and they are
not very enthusiastic about having a child in their mansion.
On the contrary.
The boy might, would probably compromise their liberty, life
style and abuses.
There is a scene wherein the ten year old boy hears strange
sounds, as if someone is in trouble, walks to the door and knocks...
Erasmus and Paul are having sex.
They explain where the sweets that the boy wants and maybe
continue on the fur of the bear where they were.
The guest has no name and this is perhaps one of the amusing
moments, when the two men took him to be educated and they are asked what is
the boy's name...
They have no idea.
At one point, he decides he wants to be called Bill.
It is a spontaneous thought.
He does not like his real name, Angel, so he will be called
Bill.
The problem is that the gay couple start loving the boy and
he would have to join his father, once he is out of prison.
Erasmus is a celebrated chef and producer of a haute cuisine
show.
Therefore he is aghast at the idea of taking the boy to Taco
Bell.
Nevertheless, since this is what he wants, this is what he
would get.
A legal battle would ensue between the parent, who is
irresponsible and dangerous in his attitude, and the gay heroes, who have
initially rejected the notion of having in their small palace a child, but are
now enchanted by him.
Ideal Home is pleasant at times, but in no way the...
