Down Periscope by Hugh Wilson - 6 out of 10

Down Periscope by Hugh Wilson
6 out of 10

So many excellent, magnificent actors have participated in the making of this comedy.

Alas, the result is nevertheless a failure.

Harry Dean Stanton - glorious in one of the best motion pictures of all time, Paris, Texas - Bruce Dern, another legend, who has delighted cinephiles for decades, astounding the public with a very recent performance in Nebraska.
For William H. Macy let us just mention Magnolia.

Down Periscope is the story of the underdog fighting the big submarines.
An old, apparently useless submarine is fighting with colossal adversaries.

The crew is of the type we are familiar from The Dirty Dozen, Police Academy or Top Secret, all by the way much better options that this flawed feature.
Many of the jokes do not stand the test of time.

On the contrary, quite a few are unacceptable today.
The crew of Stingray have one member that is female.

And too much "alleged humor" involves anatomy, human chauvinist attitudes.
Granted, these were other times with different standards.

One could also argue that gross has always been disgusting and not funny...unless, perhaps one votes for Trump...
Then grabbing pussy, cheating on partners and more of the same is just funny, I guess, for those who share the same "values" with Orange Sphincter, as Bill Maher has cleverly and hilariously named the fool.

Down Periscope is a forgettable movie.
