War of the Worlds, based on the novel by H.G. Wells
7 out of 10

This should be brief, for I did not like it.
Indeed, the simple statement should be enough, especially when the admittion of mea culpa might not be relevant.

But the it is...Tom Cruise acts as a turnoff for yours truly, ever since his role within Scientology, the enormous effect on new proselytizing has the stature of such a megastar has been exposed in a documentary that shows what a dangerous cult that is.
Yes, his private life, "religious" believes should have no bearing on the analysis of what an artist produces...

Or should it?
After all, Weinstein is out for what he did in "private" as should be.

Why not look into the potentially catastrophic effects that Scientology has for people's lives.
Then the counter argument is that radical Muslims, Christians and others engage in violent crime.

This is all besides the point.
In War of the Worlds there are spectacular battles, breathtaking movements of the earth caused by evil aliens, with their tremendous machines and powers.
It is scary and captivating.

At times though it can appear preposterous.
Sophisticated technology can be side stepped by some clever, simple human trick, only in crucial moments one could say:

Come on, such an advanced creature and he misses those poor humans down there?

Many people liked and even loved this.
For others, it could be the least enjoyable Steven Spielberg feature there is out there.

Which would make so much sense, Spielberg has created so many masterpieces, not just exceptional motion pictures, that one War of the Worlds is in order, natural...he is not alien or a god, is he?
