Green for
Danger is an excellent thriller, launched in 1946.
The film is
included on The New York Times’ Best 1,000 Movies Ever Made list:
The crime
story begins in an operating theater, during World War II, when a patient named
Joseph Higgins is brought in.
Doctor Eden
is the surgeon operating; Doctor Barnes aka the excellent Trevor Howard is the anesthesiologist.
A few
nurses are helping:
Sister Bates,
Sister Carter, Nurse Sanson, Nurse Linly and Nurse Woods.
Even if the
condition of the patient was not serious, he dies, even before any surgery is performed.
Furthermore,
before being sedated, he cries out that he recognizes a voice, just as nurse
Woods was talking.
Given the
strange circumstance of the case, a suspicious death, Doctor White, who is in
charge, wants to take steps.
He asks
Doctor Barnes is he would consider taking a break, but that infuriates the
anesthesiologist.
This would
mean that there is guilt involved and I have not done anything wrong, you just
want a scapegoat.
Your predecessor
was standing by his staff, while you are only concerned with you and your
position, he accuses.
As there is
a dancing party in the evening, one of the nurses claims that she has
incriminating evidence.
She walks
to the operating theater, while another nurse is also trying to hide something.
The whistle
blower is killed, with two knife blows and an investigator arrives at the hospital.
This is Inspector
Cockrill aka Alastair Sim a very talented actor who inserts a dose of humor
into the role.
As he tells
the story, the investigator claims some merits, states that he enjoys himself while
working.
Only whenever
a plane is flying above, granted, in a period when people were killed by bombs,
the police detective runs for shelter in an amusing way.
Five people
present at the time of the medical intervention are all suspect and seem to
have had a reason to kill the late postman.
Doctor Barnes
is in love with one of the nurses and there is a tumultuous relationship,
affected by Doctor Eden.
The latter
shows an interest in the same woman, although Nurse Woods knows him and attacks
his record as a serious womanizer.
The tension,
animosity and outright hatred and competition over one of the women in the
circle could well have led to murder.
When the
loved, disputed nurse is trying to rest, the gas is turned on and she would be
saved at the last moment.
This is when
the Inspector reduces the number of suspects to the remaining four, although
another nurse is the alleged savior.
Detective
Cockrill concocts a plan, a trap to catch the killer by enlisting the help of
the convalescing target of the attempted gas attack.
She is recovering
very well, but he pretends to the suspects that she in a serious condition and
badly needs an operation.
That is set
for the next morning at ten and is the occasion to have a crime reconstruction
and possibly find the killer.
Indeed, it
all goes badly wrong as they anesthetize the patient, who seems to be well on
the way to becoming the third corpse.
Furthermore,
there is a very interesting, fascinating turn of events at the end of this
captivating crime story.
