True Love,
written and directed by Nancy Savoca
Eight out
of 10
True Love is
included on the New York Times’ Best 1,000 Movies Ever Made list that you can
consult here:
It seems to
be however a singular appreciation for only 5 (five!) critics have bothered to
write about it and connect the notes to IMDB
Granted, it
has won the Sundance Film Festival Grand Jury Prize in 1989, but the public
only gave it an average rating of
6.1 out of
10
As for the story,
it is more than familiar.
Having been
there before is not a reason to reject Romeo and Juliet of the Godfather and
say we know all about it.
Indeed,
speaking of The Godfather, what is maybe the best film of all time came to mind
while watching True Love.
Godfather is
such a legendary, quintessential, classic work that every scene is studied and
professionals learn from them.
The marriage
ceremony, the dances, traditions have a certain resemblance with what happens
at the wedding.
For True
Love is not just about that most important feeling that “conquers all”, but
also about the issues.
Donna and
Michael are about to get married, but they fight over what has to happen and
their respective shortcomings.
Michael gets
too inebriated to do anything and just prepares to sleep in the bathroom with a
hangover.
Only he has
a million things to do, buy the necessary, take care of the organization of the
big event…
They will
have about two hundred guests and they visit the restaurant to see the details,
the colors…
Every wedding
– well almost all –has a color theme and when asked, the soon to be married
mention…the rainbow.
The maitre
d’ then talks about the fact that they are able to match the color of the
ceremony with…everything.
“Take the
mashed potatoes…we can make them blue
What do you
mean blue? Asks Michael
It is no
problem and people love it…
I will not
eat any food of that color! It is not real
But Michael,
it would be so beautiful…this is not real
That was
just one instance in which they fight and they will do that at the party, where
the groom wants one hour off.
Therefore, the
bride runs to the bathroom and cries her eyes out on the toilet, where her
friends join her.
One might
be tempted to say that they should forget about it, fro if they have so many
clashes now, it would be worse.
There is a
chance that they find a way out and they just like to confront each other and
this is providing elation and ecstasy…
In the ned,
the film is not overwhelming, although when faced with the choice between this
and the multitude of useless, new sequels to Fast and Furious, Avengers,
Baywatch and other such offers, True Love is a masterpiece to be enjoyed.
