In just a few words - actually, this raises a question- does this film need more than a few words? - this is a rather ludicrous Gladiator, without the power, creativity, originality and accomplishments of the acclaimed Oscar winner, filmed under the Vesuvius volcano.

Since only filming people running from the calamity, being crushed by stones, burnt by the lava and otherwise sent away from this world would not make for interesting viewing, some supposedly elaborate plot has been invented.
On a side note, as William Goldman, winner of two Academy Awards, author of scripts like Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid and All The President's Men, said...

You never know what film will be successful and which one would be a flop.
With a caveat these days, that any movie based on comics will win at the box office, Avengers, X Men, Spidermen and all the other mutants win big and never seem to fail.

It is also true that the story of the Titanic seemed to be a sure misfire, with a huge ship hitting an iceberg and yet, for a few good years it held the box office record.

Kit Harington is a gladiator in Pompeii,but he gives a better performance in the recent adaptation of Catch 22, where he plays Yossarian.
The noble Cassia falls in love with the gladiator, but the villain of the saga interferes.

This is loathsome, arrogant, cruel, despicable, abhorring senator Corvus aka Kiefer Sutherland.
Of we take a cynical view, all the efforts, the fights, the clashes and opposition are in vain.

Much Ado About Nothing 

Since it all goes down not just in flames, but in a cataclysmic series of mega explosions, earthquakes, destroyed constructions and crumbling earth.
It looks like they are showing us what will happen to the planet if we keep boiling it.

Earth will be Pompeii.

Another reason to be sarcastic is that it all seems futile, for the movie never works...critics have given it very poor notes, as  its appalling  Metascore of just 39 out of 100 attests.
