Before seeing Melissa McCarthy in the glorious, superb Can You Ever Forgive Me, I had learned to avoid her films, because Spy and even Bridesmaids- with the famous defecation in an exclusive shop's sink- are not exactly my cup of tea.

Alas, Life of the Party may return this cinephile to the skepticism manifest before the aforementioned outstanding Can You Ever Forgive Me.

Because, like The Guradian says 'it is lethargic and predictable in its box ticking of scenes'
If unexpectedly you are looking for advice- which you should not- then avoid it.

When Deanna finds that her husband, Dan, wants a divorce, just as their daughter is beginning college, she is naturally furious.
Even more so when she learns he is in love with the realtor, intends to sell their house, which is under his name and therefore he would keep all the money.

One slightly amusing moment comes next, as she speaks to a man who is driving her in a car, their intimacy level seeming to imply they are good friends, only we see Deanna coming out and saying she would give him a good review.
This is an Uber driver she had just invited into extreme intimacy.

The middle age woman decides to return to...college, which she had abandoned, when her daughter, Maddie, was born.
It might have been the fault of Dan, who had encouraged her to stay at home, but Deanna is fair and just and says it was her decision to take care of their baby.

What follows is a mixed bag of awkward moments, such as when she has an affair with a man who is perhaps half her age, maybe less.
Granted, we have seen in the past innumerable stories, films with men that are much older than their partners and this may just help overcome this cliché.

By the way, speaking of deja vu, almost everything in here feels like we have seen it before.
Plenty of times.

Except for the moment when Helen, the vicious real estate agent that is about to marry Dan, finds that her son seems to be in love with Deanna.
Otherwise, this is a forgettable, if not lamentable comedy.
