Spies Like Us, starring and written- with others - by Dan Aykroyd
6 out of 10
Looking at the average score that critics gave this movie, one could think it is one of the worst out there.
It surely does not count as a chef d'oeuvre.
Nonetheless, 'there is nothing either good or bad, but thinking makes it so'
Shakespeare
It all depends on circumstances...
'The mind is its own place, it can make hell out of heaven and heaven out of hell'
As I watched some of this film yesterday, I was thinking that John Stuart Mill and Shakespeare were right.
For I have seen Spies Like Us many years ago, at the British Library and...enjoyed it.
It was a time when the alternative was watching Ceausescu for hours and learning how divine, superhuman, glorious he is...
Much like Trump in America now, only the silly fans have the option to reject that monstrosity...
I am the best, my mind is splendid, I am a stable genius...
Yeah, right!
Furthermore, the start of this comedy isn't that awful.
To compare it with today:
Most of what they release now, has a quality that is beneath Spies Like Us
Look at the subjects:
Spider-Man 5, Fast and Furios 32...
The substandard of 1985 has become the norm of 2019, at least at the mega production level.
Chevy Chase and Dan Aykroyd play two buffoons that are more intelligent, likable, endowed and sophisticated than the present day American president, for all their flaws and ludicrous mannerisms.
They cheat with gusto, but do not boast of that they are the best business men in the world, as the one who had lost a billion, went bankrupt multiple times, lied, faked, absconded but still pretends to be fantastic.
To quote him:
What a loser and what a sorry tens of millions of fans.
Therefore, if you watch this rather silly film, with a terrifying Metascore of just 22!, and think in perspective, comparing the protagonists with the leader of the free world of this age for instance, you may enjoy some minutes of it.
