The obscurity in which this film was sent looks undeserved.

When you look for it on IMDB, the first suggestion is a film with Jeff Goldmund, an American one presumably.
And I mean entering the original, French Pere et Fils name, it does not get you straight to this feature.

La comble de l'obscurite.

Otherwise, this is not a French classic, although Philippe Noiret is a giant of world cinema.
For this motion picture, he has the role of Leo, paterfamilias.

He rarely speaks with his three sons and furthermore, they do not speak to each other.
Hence, his decision to play a trick so that he can enjoy their company and get them together.

Whereas in most films with parents and sons, one of the elders would suffer from a deadly disease and thus they all reunite, here we have something original...not unique, but inventive.
Leo tells his sons that he is awaiting an operation, open heart surgery and the perspective is not a happy one.

Whereas before knowing he is about to die, the sons stayed away, now they will have some adventures together.
One is using drugs, another has just separated from his partner, but together they may find the energy, means and mindset to improve their lives.

This involves experiencing adversities together, some amusing bets...

If this magician cures dad, I will take three laps around this garden, naked...
I will take four'

Much of this is deja vu and there are a few, perhaps unavoidable clichés.
But the movie is watchable and the performance of the artists is wonderful.
